From around 1972; Possibly 1973: Two versions of this song were on the pop airwaves of the US at the same time. One of them made it to #3. The other faded into obscurity. Three Dog Night had the big hit . The one that faded was done by the guy who wrote it. He had one other single that made it to #9 on Billboard about that time that was covered by a very successful duo in the 90s who took it to #1 on the country charts.
What was the song that Three Dog Night did so well with and who was the original artist? Extra credit - who was the country act that remade his other hit song in the 90s and what was it?

I know Three Dog Night quite well but you got me on this one. Country act?
I know people like Harry Neilson, Elton John and Bernie Taupon, Randy Newman and even Brian Wilson wrote songs that Three Dog Night made famous but some one redoing a country version of one?
