I'm looking forward to this album. I've listened to past work by Carne Doce, and it hasn't stuck, but with these recent tracks (especially the one I posted earlier on this thread, and this one--although this one is not up to the level of "Temporal"), this sounds like a (rock) band coming into its own.
There certainly is variety out there and groups I had not heard before.
I was surprised to hear about X's new album. On first listen I wasn't excited. I still put on the old stuff occasionally. That is what I prefer.
Honestly, I listened to the X album once or twice, and, while it's a little exciting that it sounds like X, it's just not even close to the standard of their first three albums (or the best bits from their fourth). Sadly, I doubt I will be going back to it.
I also didn't get far with the new Laura Marling album. Not enough musically to drag me through her endless confessional songs about this mysterious woman and that mysterious woman in her life.
Rheinzand is a bit too much of the same thing across the whole album, although I am still enthusiastic about some individual tracks. I think partly I am just not into the male vocalist's ironically growly spoken word parts, over and over again. (And they left out possibly my favorite of their tracks so far, "Mi Mundo," which has more psychedelic touches than some of their work.)
Also, Shiina Ringo's song on the new Tokyo Jihen EP is the only one that grabs me at all, which doesn't surprise me too much, since she is head and shoulders about the rest of the band, as a songwriter.
Incidentally, NW Crow, if you don't know, Bohren & Der Club Of Gore have a new album out.
