I'm fortunate that when I was an early teen when Depeche Mode came out and I followed them from the early days to beyond their peak in the early 90s. Went to multiple concerts starting with Concert for the Masses, Violator Tour, etc. This was at the time when most teens were metal heads until grunge started with Nirvana.
Older Millennial here, age 35. Like some of their stuff. Have an interesting story about listening to them, too. When I had a temp IT job in the a public school district a few years ago, a guy I was working alongside asked me what kind of music he could play while we were gathering a bunch of old computer equipment at the schools. I asked if he had any electronic music, and he had Depeche Mode. So I heard a lot of their stuff throughout the day while hauling around computer parts.
I'm an old fart, and my wife got me into Depeche Mode. You younger whippersnappers may do a head-turn if you saw me out in traffic listening to Violator.
I can play several instruments, so have a natural love of music.
Electronic is one of my favorites. Everything Depeche Mode does, is great imho.
From personal experience, Music for the Masses was the best album at the height of their popularity. It's not as pure as Speak and Spell or Some Great Rewards are my 2 favorites and many fans never heard of their early stuff.
Personal Jesus was another commercial success it was on regular radio. I didn't like it as much because it was too mainstream. Most of the diehard DM fans prefer pre-Music for Masses stuff.
