When I was a kid, with a record player, I listened to the Monkees a lot, and a Snoopy and the Red Baron album.
When I got a few years older, I listened to Neil Young's 'After the Goldrush' and Grand Funk Railroad's "I'm Your Captain". Over and over. And I tended to sing along. God bless my parents, they didn't complain. lol
As a 13 year old, I discovered Phil Collins, both solo and with Genesis. He was my first music artist that was mine and not hand me downs from my sisters who were into Van Halen, Aerosmith and other 70s bands. I kinda liked having an artist I discovered on my own... other than the other countless millions of people who were listening to Phil Collins, too. So "In The Air Tonight," "Abacab," "Mama" and "Against All Odds" was getting played a lot in my room.
People who are younger than I am probably don't understand how huge Phil Collins (with and without Genesis) was in the 80s. Like him, love him or hate him, he was everywhere.
45s, remember those? bought first one at age 11 around 1971, No Time by The Guess Who. Others I can remember, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. American Pie, the songs was split between the 2 sides. Already Gone by The Eagles, was on the B side forget what was on the A side. Young Americans by David Bowie. Played on an old foldout record player my mom and dad had since the 1950s. Few yrs later I inherited my older brothers tape recorder which he had grown tired of. I would tape songs off the radio, rewind them over and over, and try to figure out the lyrics. This was around 1973-74. Bennie and The Jets was really tough I never got half of it.
Albums listened to many many MANY times in teen years, 1975 to 1980: First albums I got, Paul McCartney Band on the Run, Elton John and Chicago Greatest Hits. Led Zeppelin all albums except III did not like it much. Boston 1st album I wore it out. Foreigner Ted Nugent Styx Blue Oyster Cult Black Sabbath Rush Pink Floyd Deep Purple Queen. Then after high school, The Beatles The Doors The Cars Elvis Costello The B52s The Clash Micheal Stanley Band Van Halen UFO Scorpions Triumph, and the first Def Leppard album. I still listen to a lot of these songs but not in album form.
