This band from Ireland, popular with the kids, called The U2's (like the airplanes), made a musical MTV video on a downtown L.A. rooftop. Anybody here see this?

I miss the old L.A. (minus the smog).

U2 was great back in the 80s, before they became all preachy & political.

Well, if you mean their first two albums, then yes. But every single album starting with War (1983) had a political and social focus.

This is like the Rage Against the Machine fan who told Tom Morello to stick to music, not politics, LOL Maybe you've never heard "Sunday Bloody Sunday" before.

At the time I thought it was a bit cheezy ...copying the Beatles...who did it 18 years earlier ....
or less known ...The Jefferson Airplane...who did it in NYC in 1968....

Yep, apparently Bono once joked in an interview, “it’s not the first time we’ve ripped off the Beatles.”

Though as you point out the Jefferson Airplane did it NYC before the Beatles. And it was originally filmed/directed by by Jean-Luc Godard (before the police shut it down).

Let me fix it for you:

I used to like U2. Then I became opinionated about politics, understood U2’s politics, and did not approve.

It has to be this, because U2 has been political since their October album.

Well I dont give a horse crap about a musicians politics, if I like the music I listen. Liked U2 a lot in the 1980s, I saw this video on MTV, may have seen the debut of it. U2 fell off a cliff in music quality after 1991's Achtung Baby album, I have not liked anything they have done since.

I agree...they lost me after Achtung Baby....they still had the ocassional memorable song
since but like most music artists they had the peak period, hard to sustain for 30 or 40 years...Joshua Tree is probably their best album...almost every song is good, almost...
I get bored pretty quick of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"....three chord stock progression ....anyone could write that one about 5 minutes...

Zooropa and Pop are both great records. After that, they released some good singles like "Vertigo" and "Beautiful Day."
