Jimi Hendrix single-handedly invented the concept of a guitar god.

Everybody else followed.

So, if it's going to come down to one person, then it's probably going to be him.

Peter Green was a very talented guitar player, who struggled with mental illness, along with fellow 60's musician Syd Barrett.

The legendary B.B. King once said of Peter Green that 'he was the only guitarist to bring him out in a "cold sweat"'.

No mention of....

Leslie West ....love his phrasing ...great tone from Les Paul Junior through Sunn tube amps...

Paul Kossoff...lead guitarist in the band 'Free" ...nice vibrato ...super tone ...Les Paul through Marshalls

Duane Allman....legendary guitarist with Allman Brothers and Derek and the Dominoes

Steve Howe....of "Yes" fame....unique guitar playing style ...great on acoustic as well as electric...

Frank Zappa....crazy good player...unique tones playing his heavily customized Gibson SG

Terry Kath....with "Chicago"....Hendrix once said Kath was a better guitarist...

Randy California ....with "Spirit"...really strong lead player....

Peter Frampton....underrated ......very smooth lead player...Les Paul through Marshalls

Mick Ronson....played on David Bowie albums....thick tone ...Les Paul through 200 watt Marshall Majors...

Others that were very good....

Neil Schon of Journey

Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath

Alvin Lee of Ten Years After

Ted Nugent

Glen Campbell

Rory Gallagher

Roy Buchanan...check out him playing "Roy's Bluz"...1976 Austin City Limits on youtube

Name a few of these covers. I've got to hear this.
Gonna have to go with Joe on this one.

And Zepplin sounds like a black and white TV with the originals. It's just springy reverb, does not grab you in any way like Joe does. Part of it is recording, it's just much better now, you couldn't get Joes intricacies on back in the day recording. Part of it is Joe just knows how to put emotion in his playing and changes dynamics much more than Jimmy Page did.

Same thing if you listen to Joe's cover of Clapton on that same album. Clapton is another one I for the life of me cannot figure out how he became such a lengend. He's got some interesting riffs he originated, but his playing isn't as gripping as modern counterparts. Tony Iommi both created riffs AND a solid sound and a whole catalogue of diverse sounds.

BB King is far and away more deserving here than Hendrix - he was first, is a true genre founding father, actually produced a whole catologue of music to inspire countless other artists to cover... BB had a tone and playstyle he owns.

True talent is determined if a song / artist sticks around after their live audience initial fanbase is gone. So some like the Grateful Dead remain heavily listened to by people who weren't around during their heyday while for someone like the BeeGees - not so much.

Gary's an example where the person that was influenced actually ended up being better than the originators. Derek Trucks is another one, he's eclipsed Duane Allman.

For sheer presence on stage no question. Hendrix. He wowed the greatest, even the guitar god Clapton at the time. Not sure who said it. It was either Clapton or Pete Townsend upon seeing him. Whatever you think you can do on a guitar, Its been done! Stevie Ray Vaughan and then Clapton. I only have three.
