I was listening to a list on the radio of over rated things and included were the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Have to agree I've never understood the hoopla surrounding these people. I mean really what was so great about them. Is it a case of people being sheep's?...."The emperor's new clothes" and all that?
Sorry, but if you are comparing the Beetles and Stones to what qualifies as "top tallent" today, I think you'll see many of our current entertainers can not hold a candle to them....
Over rated? Who and which station came up with that BS Ann?...They went beyond great and inspirational. I defy anyone to look at biographies of any artists of any note since and not find at least one of them cited as an influence....
[quote=yrgm;5414957]Oh my, if you don't understand by now why these bands are great, I don't think anyone could explain it to you.
Been racking my brain over where to begin. I say just do some research and some extensive listening and get back to me. I think the most incredible aspect of the Beatles was the amazing progression of the songwriting in a very short period of time. From 'Love Me Do' to 'A Day in the Life' in four years!
The Beatles and the Stones are certainly not overrated. The influence they've had on music cannot be (in the words of our President) "misunderestimated."
There are some bands who are though. Off the top of my head, those overrated bands would include:
Van Halen (easily tops the list) Pink Floyd (not bad, but not great) U2 (their last great album was Achtung Baby; everything since then has been meh) Rush (three very talented guys whose talents never seemed to mesh well together)

I'm not comparing them to a lot of the crap out there today. My feeling is they were lucky they came about at the right time when kids needed something exiting in music. Take the Rolling Stones for example, England wasn't exactly the grooviest part of the planet and much of what influenced them in the early days never got the same "hype" and commercial exposure that they did on American radio. Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard didn't exactly have lil white gals screaming ,fainting and creamin' their knickers did they?
You know you can package anything, give it enough hype and people will actually believe it. Hey look - decades later and y'all still do!

Most artists I truly admire have never sited the Beatles or Rolling Stones as influences and while I will credit them with some unforgettable songs (some which I learned along with nursery rhymes ), they just weren't all that they are chalked up to be.
