In this interview with Keith Richards, of the Rolling Stones, he gives a first hand account of what Elvis did to music and the transition he made into the music we have today and the sudden erasure of racial separation and barriers and how he made music accessible to anyone.

I love the Memphis sessions. Great stuff. I really enjoy a lot that followed as well, though the Memphis stuff is on another level. The Legacy set that came out a few years back is excellent.
