The "Record Report" is a special feature in the publication in which journalists rate albums. Ratings range from one to five mics paralleling a typical five-star rating scale. An album that is rated at four-and-a-half or five "mics" is considered by The Source to be a superior hip hop album[citation needed]. Over the first ten years or so, the heralded "five mic" rating only applied to albums that were universally lauded hip hop albums. A total of 47 albums have been awarded five mics; a complete, chronological list is below.[citation needed]

I must say that The Naked Truth shouldn't have received 5 mics and the Chronic 2001 shouldn't have recieved 4.5 mics. Sorry Dre fans but in no way was 2001 as good as the original

By no means should naked truth have gotten five mics, but by that time no one took the "benzino" influenced soucre seriously anyway. I thought All eyez on me got 4.5 mics?

XXL rates albums from "S" (poor) to "XXL" (classic). Initially, editors awarded XXL status to only six albums:
