VAfury's Billy Oceans post about Carribean Queen got me thinking about saxophone solos. I have a few faves.

One of mine is from a band I was never all that crazy about:

Foreigner, playing Urgent The original solo was played by Jr. Walker. It kicks butt.

Also have always loved Clarence Clemons; his solo in bandmaster Bruce Springsteen's Jungleland is sweet and haunting.

Here is a cover of it

Anyone else have any favorites?

Just The Way You Are, Billy Joel

Sax solo by Phil Woods, one of my favorite alto players.

Close the thread - Urgent has already been mentioned! And thanks for that bit of trivia, cil. I had no real interest in Foreigner either, but always thought this solo was the best ever.

Clemons sound defined the E Street band. And that Billy Joel # ain't too shabby either, Burdell.

OK, my entries...

Rolling Stones / Can't You Hear Me Knocking
Pink Floyd's Us and Them.

I love Phil Woods - Every solo he plays seems both passionate and ...carefully written. But it's usually not written, it's improvised. And he sounds as great today, even wth everything he's recently gone through...It's nice to see he's officially a NEA "Jazz Master" now...

What other Alto players do you like Burdell?

I know it's more a hook than a solo, but "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty will always come to mind when I think sax in a rock song. Outside of rock, I think of Gerry Mulligan ("Funhouse") and John Coltrane ("Giant Steps").

Nice choices, guys.
And I will check out the ones I don't know.
Sax riffs are okay, too.
