I'm pretty limited on jazz. But I do love John Coltrane and, when I'm in the right mood, either of the Marsalis brothers.

Prefer 50's & 60's style jazz, like Cannonball Adderly and Dizzy Gillespie. Like a lot of Miles Davis and Grover Washington. Also love the earlier Big Band stuff like The Duke.

Like the singing of Frank Sinatra, Louie Prima, Cassandra Wilson, sometimes Diana Krall.

If I HAVE to pick one, I'll go with The Duke.

Eric Dolphy by far

but as far as contemporary/living it'd have to be Robert Glasper

How about a couple more from Louis. I'm sure no one minds right?

YouTube - Louis Armstrong - Basin Street Blues - 1959

YouTube - Louis Armstrong - When The Saints Go Marching In

Duke Ellington said of Louis, "He was born poor, died rich, and never hurt anyone along the way." Nice legacy Louis!!!

Default Who do you consider to be the father of smooth jazz (the genre, not the radio format)?

I think there may be some fans of smooth jazz here, so I decided to do a poll.

So, who do you consider to be the founding father of smooth jazz?

I personally would give most credit to George Benson. After all, his two hit instrumentals (Breezin' and Affirmation) helped defined the sound of smooth jazz.

And no, Kenny G did not invent smooth jazz, as he is predated by several other artists who are considered smooth jazz.

And if you were wondering why I am making my post in pink, it is because pink is the color that best represents smooth jazz.

John Lewis who founded the Modern Jazz Quartet in 1952.
They were so smooth that original drummer Kenny Clarke fell asleep.
