Anyway, back to the topic at hand... My favorite tune on Rubber Soul is "If I Needed Someone." The tune is great, the lyrics show a a wariness and maturity beyond the simplistic "I wanna hold your hand and love you every day girl" songs that had made up much of their repertoire until then, the harmonies are the Beatles at their best, and George was a very underrated songwriter. It's become cliche by now that Sgt. Pepper was their greatest technological achievement, but that has a lot more to do with studio engineering than brilliant songwriting. IMO their greatest songwriting achievement was Revolver, and it also gave a glimpse of the future of studio engineering to boot -- the best of both worlds in balance rather than one overshadowing the other.

"It's Only Love" from the US Rubber Soul album was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. A few years later while learning Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" I realized that the two were quite similar. Rubber Soul has so many great tunes that it's hard to pick one favorite. "Nowhere Man", "Girl", and "In My Life" are at the top of the list though.

Yes, the Beatles have been done to death. Everything that could be written about them seemingly has. But there are always new listeners with fresh perspectives and of course there are the re-masters. Occasionally I'll hear a song that I haven't heard in eons that will just stop me in my tracks and make me wonder how these guys did all those wonderful things they did.

The beatles broke up in 1970 & paul, george & ringo blame it on john & yoko ono.john would let yoko sit in on the rehearsing & recording sessions. When i visited london I regreted not touring apple records. The beatles fans are young to old.My niece likes them & shes 13 & my dad still listens to them & hes in his 70,s.Two of my many all time favorite beatles songs are penny lane & strawberry fields forever.

Forever Changes by Love blows Pepper away!

Great band but not quite as good as the Kinks. Better than the Rolling Stones and FAR better than the Who.

Beings as this thread is simply titled The Beatles I will talk of them from the standpoint of their product. Thirty seven years after their breakup, their sales are still strong on reissue vinyl, collectible vinyl, 45 picture sleeves, sheet music, and a bevy of other types of memorabilia. Lots of guys in their thirties have been collecting Beatles and Stones for years. Now everyone has their favorite groups and solo artists. Everyone has opinions. But if the Velvet Underground blows away the Beatles, how much of their material is covered on oldies radio and classic rock? Can anyone and/or everyone say ZERO!?!?! Love does a little better with Seven&Seven Is and My Little Red Book. Like square peg said, start a VU thread and he probably put in a post. Same with me.
