Oh, and as to the Statler Bros., does anybody here remember their hilarious parody country album, "Lester Roadhog Moran & the Cadillac Cowboys"? Used to crack me up.
I'm a northerner, living in NYC, and it's lonely being a country music fan here! When I was a kid, I used to love Johnny Cash's television show. "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash." What a man he was. He really sort of crossed over and appeals to the young, hipster generation. There's a store in my neighborhood that sells Johnny Cash t-shirts. I thought that was weird and asked my 20-year-old daughter about it and she said, "Mom, everybody loves Johnny Cash!"
There are a number of artists that could be considered "classic". Guess it depends on when you grew up. Johnny Cash and Joe Stampley are in a different timeframe than Merle Haggard and David Allan Coe. George Strait and Randy Travis have both produced music closer to that "classic" sound than people like Big and Rich and Toby Keith.
I think that Garth Brooks was one of the first to turn country music to a more "pop" sound and sensibility. Then again, and I ask this almost every time the discussion comes up, what makes a song "country" or non-country? Both "I Swear" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" have pop and country versions. Or "I Will Always Love You"--Dolly Parton or Whitney Houston?
I enjoy George Jones, as much as I enjoy Alabama or Steve Earle. I think I'm pretty open in my tastes in general.
