King's X. They did have success, but unforunately they never did hit it big. Great band.

I saw these guys open for Guns and Roses and Metallica in 1991 in Washington, DC (shortly before the Montreal accident/riot). They were absolutely phenomenal as a live band and - dare I say - were the best of the three bands that night:

Definitely Helios Creed and Chrome! Helios/Chrome inspired TONS of musicians like Butthole Surfers, Ministry, etc. but kind of got left in the dust, even after 30+albums...he's a genius and has written/recorded countless spacey masterpieces- here are just a few to check out if you aren't familiar:

God lives underwater, they were a fantastic industrial-rock band from the 90s. It was during the fall of the grunge days, and they peaked for a bit with a semi cult following. I wish they would have endured more success though. The mid 90s had some phenomenal bands that just got swept under the rug when bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn took over

During the mid 90's in Orange County CA, there were lots of bands all playing at the same time that Sugar Ray, Lit and Incubus were starting out.

There were a lot of bands I though would make it big.

Hed (pe), Dial-7, B*tch Funky Sex Machine, Mother Tongue, Burnin Groove, The Grabbers and the X-Members.

This band was popular in Europe in the 1980s; why they eluded success in the U.S. is beyond me. Their first four albums are outstanding.

Here was their biggest "hit" in the U.S. - notice the strong Genesis influence (particularly in vocals/keyboards):

You beat me to it marksman. In the Air Force in the early 80's (station in Germany) I saw them twice. The second time I saw them there, they played with Saga, another band that made my list. Both bands were so tight, so well mixed and just so professional that I clearly remember that show nearly 30 years later. Both bands had moderate success in the states but never hit it big. They both deserved it.

I hear you Larz, King's X was also a very good band that stardom eluded.

Default Don't know where they're from...

But I love the Tragically Hip. Never made it 'big time', and I love their music.

There is a great story about them in the book "Next, the Future Just Happened" by Michael Lewis. He talks about how they used to internet to raise money to record and pay for a tour of the U.S. Very interesting.
