John Lennon said it best; "Without Elvis there would have been no Beatles."

To put it succinctly, Elvis Presley was the first rock and roller with total STARPOWER. As he rose to stardom, he was carped by the establishment as brash, vulgar, incompetent, and worse. Presley blew past everyone in popular music effortlessly.

While worldwide figures can be disputed as there hasn't been a pinpoint way of really knowing how many albums, cd's, reel to reels, cassettes, etc., etc, it is believed that he has sold close to a billion and a half recordings worldwide. As astonishing a figure as that is, actually here is one stat I will throw at you that is equally impressive from the standpoint of USA releases. According to figures from the RIAA (this is several years back), Elvis has more gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards than any artist. As of 2001, that figure came in at 131.

Thirty two years after his death, Elvis Presley is still very relative. His original recordings are actively collected by collectors worldwide. Dozens of titles on compact discs are available at stores and on the net. Then there is Graceland, and the memorabilia sales and the crowds who come to see the place.

He is as huge a figure as a recording artist can be.

That's the best article I've read in some time! Don't know why - but he image of Jethro Bodine kept popping up in my mind. Elvis truly was very much a kid at heart.
