This year marks the 160th anniversary of the kazoo, and perhaps no musical instrument is more universal – and universally misunderstood.
Although the instrument has been used by such greats as Jimi Hendrix on "Crosstown Traffic," the ease with which any amateur can toot on the buzz-worthy instrument has led to it being unfairly maligned.
I don't like to post negative posts, but I HATE the kazoo! I really hate it when artists record soungs with kazoo in it, I don't find it "cute" or "whimsical" at all.
I guess you can consider them instruments, but I consider them party favors.
Paula Lockhart a bluesy singer, who many years ago was the sultry singing voice on Carolina rice commercials, played the kazoo in her act. I saw her and a male co-performer in the mid-70's in a tacky little bar/club called the Speakeasy on Broadway about 75th St. in Manhattan. That woman played a mean, wild and sexy kazoo - no kid's toy with her!
