What would you nominate as the greatest American song in our country's history? Define "Greatest" and "American" any way you like. Here's my nomination---the original recording by immigrant Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers (including Roy Rogers) singing his 1936 composition "Cool Water".

For songs about America, perhaps John Melloncamp's PINK HOUSES, I admire that song more and more as time goes by, esp the slower versions.

For patriotic songs, Ted Nugent's BOUND AND GAGGED

As for songs by US artists, some greats might include Willie Nelson's NIGHT LIFE and CRAZY, Ray Charles GEORGIA, Aerosmith's WALK THIS WAY, Bston's MORE THAN A FEELING, Skynyrd's FREEBIRD. S&G's SOUNDS OF SILENCE, Billy Joel's NEW YORK STATE OF MIND...

I have always loved that song. Love Mellencamp. He and Elvis and Springsteen and Aretha and Bob Dylan all say America to me.

American music runs the gamut because American citizens do, too.
Jazz, rock and roll, country, outlaw country, blues, gospel, rap etc.

Obviously America, along with its large size and varying geography, is a jumble of attitudes and traditions and the songs can range from sentimentality to cynicism.
I think of Irving Berlin's God Bless America,or George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land (including the commie lyrics.)
I think of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On.
Merle Haggard's Okie from Muskogee. Springsteen's Prove It All Night.
The Grateful Dead's American Beauty (entire album).
And then there is Warren Zevon's Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Always loved this song. This video is by the song's composer, Steve Goodman, but I've enjoyed the many covers.

My intention was to elicit songs of enduring musical quality that, as an aside, also happen to reflect the American spirit and evoke a sense of what America is. As opposed to every song that has America in the title, composed as a flag-waving gesture of patriotism.
