Still planning on moving to the area when we can. Have a elderly parent who we are taking care of-she's 86. At least we can still enjoy our 3 week vacation yearly until then.
What I had a question about are about jobs. I've recently gone back to school to learn medical billing and coding-will have NHA CBCS certification in a week. So I'll have some experience by the time we come down. What are jobs like down in the area for it? What can I expect for pay-I know it'll be less than upstate NY, but that's fine since we'll own our home our right down there and be debt free when we come.
The other is my spouse has his own business(LLC) up this way-a dryer vent cleaning service. He also does other services too, but do you think that would still be doable down in the area? He also has his universal certification for HVAC-R. Prior experience was in Ready Mix Concrete as a dispatcher for 21 years. So he's got a bit to play with also.
Figured since we are still wanting to come down-we'll adjust our job needs as we get closer.
Thanks!
Jobs are pretty much non existant. However, if you're lucky to get one, you can expect to get paid a little over minimum wage. For some bizarre reason, employers think it's fair to pay low wages here. May want to check on the unemployment site, they list jobs available. Also, the SunNews links employment to Careerbuilder.com.
I spoke to someone yesterday who had her college degree in the medical field and wasn't able to get a job. She's a waitress now.

Oh, it's not going to be anytime soon. It's probably a few years out yet. Figured I'd get some experience under my belt with the billing and coding up here and try my luck when I get there. And for the hubby-we are wondering if his business would have much luck down that way-he does dryer vent cleaning, bathroom vent, refrigerator coil cleanings, cleaning fins for central a/c, etc. Is there a glut of of companies that clean air ducts down there? We will be adding services here too before we move-but playing that by ear. More just getting a feel for what salaries could be.
They are underpaying like no tomorrow up here for new jobs. It's bad. I broke my ankle in 3 places and dislocated it in Feb.09. My job terminated me for health reasons this past Feb-I drove a school bus and under Federal laws-can't pass the physical. I've been told by my VESID counselor and unemployment-that I have to take a job offered me even if it only pays 1/2 of what I used to-part time driving a bus it was $300 week-how I can live on $150? Which is baloney. In this area-$400 a week isn't going to pay for much at all. Down in MB-both of us doing that-yeah, we'd be ok since we'd already own the house we are in outright. But we've got plenty of time before we get there-hopefully by then things will improve-it wouldn't be anytime before 2012 anyway.
I don't see anything changing by 2012. 2020, maybe. MAYBE. I think a lot of it will fall on who will be President next and what their plans are for illegal immigration. Honestly, I've never heard that kind of job outside of commercial work for hotels and restaurants. Maybe he can contact some of the local HVAC companies and find out? Seems like an odd, specialized job, but cool in a way.
Sorry about your ankle, that really sounds horrible! I guess I can't complain about my ailments after hearing that. Would you be able to file for disability? Maybe you can drive a bus down here? Not sure what the requirements are, honestly. All I know is, this state is in SERIOUS, desperate need of help. they really don't know how to run the state correctly, and they are very antiquated in their ways. Not sure anything short of a whole new shift in power, would change a thing.

Hubby got into it after reading about house fires in the area here-all caused by dryer vents that were clogged up. People don't think to get it done and they think that just by cleaning the lint trap that covers it. Even ours-on our 1/2 year cleaning-he got 1/2 a garbage bag full from cleaning out the ductwork. He gets some referrals now from appliance repair places-maybe he'll contact them when we get there.
I tried putting in for disability-but I was 4 quarters(1 year) short based on my age. Up here in NYS-if you work for any governmental agency-ie school district-they don't participate in disability insurance either. So I didn't get it from anywhere. It's been rough being out of work since Feb.09 and having to pay for our health insurance-my retirement is about used up now. So I went back to school to get certification in medical billing since I'll never pass the Federal DOT physical for my CDL again since they have to fuse the ankle. I've also got a degree in hospitality and tourism and at least I can use that when I come down if not the medical billing.
You'll be seeing people leaving where we are in droves here I imagine in the next few years-NYS is about to implode on itself. The budge was due in April, still no budget. Taxing everything-our cigarettes just went up to $9.62 a pack-they want to tax soda and juices for a "fat Tax". School taxes are astronomical every where up here-mine is almost 3k for a 1/3 of an acre and 2000sqft house and I live upstate too. My parents moved here from NC/VA back in 51-so I am just moving back to be closer to my family.
pburgess68- By the way-aren't you from my neck of the woods here in Dutchess originally? One of my neighbors moved there back in the 80's and was there til they both passed in the early 2000's. My other neighbor just moved to North Myrtle-he had a house built there last spring.
Yep, I'm from LaGrange, actually. I know the feeling about taxes. My parents had a home in Staatsburgh with 6 acres, so they DEFINITELY understand about taxes!! Now they have 62 acres on their 2nd home they have here, and barely pay anything. HOWEVER, you do get what you pay for (remember that old saying?!) In this case, you aren't getting a thing. Horrible schools, low taxes, high cost of food.
It's great for a retiree with invested income (my parents), but really hard on people trying to work and make a living. Many retirees actually have returned to work as is evident by every store you walk in down here. I'm sure it's the same up north, if not even more so.
I think, when it's time to move, we'll research very very hard before we chose another southern state. Last time, I just did it to be close to my family after going thru a divorce. Did no research whatsoever except for what school district was the best in Horry County.
If we tried to sell our house now, we'd take a huge hit on it. We'll have to wait out the housing depression and see how it goes. 2 more years and my last one will be through high school and on to college himself. If he keeps his grades up, he should be looking at a scholarship. We are imploring him to go to school out of state. In all honesty, with his major, he'd almost have to anyway. My eldest is going to be a chemist, so he can go anywhere.
My sister lives in the Baltimore/DC area and there is very little to no recession going on there. If we didn't just buy a house a year ago, we may have considered moving up there. At least my better half would have an awesome job working for the government!!

My spouse is from Lagrange-me-Fishkill. The difference for us I think is that my parents originally moved here to NY from VA and NC with Texaco. So the rest of my family is still all there in the South. We only have one left at home and would be our only concern for schooling. I hate the taxes here-car insurance-we can't even discuss that, lol We are hurting here terribly-spouse's new business even with all the advertising isn't even getting a phone call. I can't find any job here at all. We are hitting rock bottom and it's not pretty. We own our home outright so no mortgage-no car payments. So we are in good shape there. If we could leave-I'd do it tomorrow-but having a 86 year old Mother with health issues who's house bound prevents us from doing anything. She won't go back south-it's too much for her at this time with her health. It's starting to feel hopeless. If worse came to worse, we'd sell, move down and store all our stuff and stay in our camper in the campground while looking for work or until things got better-cheaper to live that way for a while. NYS is taking us down the tube and we've got to get out of here soon.
Oh, I understand. I have lots of friends up there still. I can't believe they passed their horrendous school budget!! I know I used to help push the budget thru being on the PTA board and all, but this budget was just shameful. When the higher ups start taking pay cuts to help the kids out, then I can see people passing the budget. You know what Horry County could do with TEN PERCENT of any one of the Dutchess County school's budgets?! Granted, they'd probably waste it because they haven't seen that sort of money in ...well...ever...but still.
If you can wait it out for your child to get out of high school, do it. Not sure where you are in NY now, but if you're still in that area where you 2 are from, then I wouldn't even CONSIDER leaving. Especially if you're in John Jay, Arlington, etc. Then again, if your child is in special ed, head on down. You won't see a better special education system anywhere. No joke. That is the one benefit I saw when we got here. I was simply amazed at what they offered to the special education children. They bloom!!

I had worked for Arlington for years-I got terminated because of the ankle being shattered and they didn't have to offer me another job in the district I could do since I am disabled by it-it need to have fusion surgery. I am amazed a lot of the district's budgets passed here. My kids are in the Jay feeder-although two are in college now. It's gone so far down from when I was in school there. My child last one should be in honors but because of the post office not getting us the info-the district now won't let her in-has to be in regular classes-she's going to be bored.
I have a friend who teaches in North Myrtle Beach-has been their since we got out of college. She really likes her school and it seems to be part of the better ones down that way. But like you said-if they had a $186 million dollar budget like my district has, it's mind boggling! One thing I like better though about schools there is that there are more course offerings that here now. Our AP classes have wait lists-most never get to take it one if they wanted to.
Someday we'll get there. More likely the outskirts of the area-within a 1-2 hour drive. For now-we'll just keep going to Pirateland.
