There is a massive gas tax that is effective in collier county to pay for the lovely medians on every road. It makes gas about $.50 a gallon more expensive that the rest of the state. This adds up a lot so keep that in mind.

Would like to see your info link on that item...that half a buck a gallon is urban myth, imo.

And, from this FL State Tax site:

FL Dept Rev - Local Option Taxes

Local Option Fuel Taxes
Sections 206.41(1)(d)-(e), 206.87(1)(b)-(c), 336.021, and 336.025, Florida Statutes

County governments are authorized to levy up to 12 cents of local option fuel taxes in three separate levies on fuel sold within the county. The funds are used for transportation expenditures.
 • The ninth-cent fuel tax is a tax of 1 cent on every net gallon of motor and diesel fuel sold within a county.
 • A tax of 1 to 6 cents on every net gallon of motor and diesel fuel sold within a county.
 • A tax of 1 to 5 cents on every net gallon of motor fuel sold within a county. Diesel fuel is not subject to this tax. The funds may also be used to meet the requirements of the capital improvements element of an adopted local government comprehensive plan.
Note: The Florida Legislature has authorized the statewide equalization of local option tax rates on diesel fuel. It requires that the full 6 cents of the 1-to-6-cents fuel tax as well as the 1-cent ninth-cent fuel tax be levied on diesel fuel in every county, even though the county government may not have imposed either tax on motor fuel or may not be levying the tax on motor fuel at the maximum rate. As a result, 7 cents' worth of local option tax revenue on diesel fuel are distributed to local governments, regardless of whether the county is levying these two taxes on motor fuel.

In January gas was 2.00 a gallon in Orlando and 2.50 in naples. It is currently 2.65 a gallon in naples despite oil trading below $50 a barrel.

This money is used to fund collier county's lavish police force and the decorated medians on the roads.

Did you just call collier's expensive gas a myth?? That is pretty well known by everyone in the county that collier has significantly higher gas prices than most counties in the state.

What it pays for I only hear by word of mouth. The medians makes a lot of sense though. No where has lavish road medians like collier county.

Geez! You are paying way too much for gas in Naples. I don't know where you are buying gas, but it is much cheaper than that all over Naples. Don't you log onto gasbuddy to compare prices before you purchase?

Gas where I purchase in Naples is around 2.50-2.53 for today and yesterday. If you shop around you will find that there are good prices here.

Decent gas prices are why there is always a line at the Costco gas station.

It is a function of transport, market, and a few other variables.

We winter now in Nokomis area, and gas is several cents per gallon less than our previous 9 winters in Naples. I attribute that difference to 90 miles of hauling and 'market'.
Neither pricing has any impact on our lives...

But, Collier County does not 'tax' a gallon 50 Cts extra, and that diff between DisneyVille and Naples was not a function of a 50 Cts a gal 'tax', in CC.

How did it feel when gas was $4+?

People get exercised about the pump price, as every corner has big signs with the pricing, but few can quote the price of a gallon of milk. 15,000 miles per year at $2.50 vs $4.00 is ~$1500 a yr diff, about what one spends on their cell phones per year to tell their spouse they are currently in row 7 at Walmart...

Did you read the links?

The Naples area medians do look nice. As for funding the cops, not sure that is the case.

Spot or futures oil price per BBL has no immediate effect on gas pricing in most of the US, other than the reaction when it rises slightly. GOOG 'futures'. Econ 101.

If you want to beef, call your congressman and ask why there hasn't been a new refinery built in the US in the last several decades: howling at the moon, but your post is lacking in any facts or real info, imo. And, I think we are wobbling off topic.

Collier County charges the maximum local option gas tax allowed. A few years ago it was renewed for another ten year period.

This tax pays for roads.

The medians are paid for by "beautification district" taxes or similar that are on your tax bill. There are several depending on where you live, which is why there are different standards for medians around town.

Overtaxed or not the roads (along with the "beautified" medians) are a lot nicer than in most other places I've lived in.
