Not sure if this thread is still active. I am buying a 5 acre lot out on 8th ave SE. There is nothing there at this point but trees. Not even a culvert. Are there any recommendations on where to start? I got a lead for the soil sampling and perc test from the listing realtor. He recommended Forge Engineering. I'm not in a hurry to do anything at thing at this point, but if the cost is reasonable I will move forward. I can wait out the craziness if the cost of work is too high right now. My time frame to build is within the next 5 years. The plan today would be to buildout a large garage with living quarters to make it somewhat useable until I buildout the main house.

There couldn't be a worse time to build something than right now

Building new homes anywhere is not going to get any cheaper until and if we get a crash like 07/08. It isn't economic, it's political. The left is determined to put people in urban areas in the name of conservation. They don't plan on stopping Glades reclamation at 75. They're going all the way to Lake O one way or another. But that's a whole different topic. Like the equities market, if you waited for a pullback to get in, you missed a triple. I notice a company is building homes in SWFL all steel, roof trusses and all. Gunnite sprayed walls and flat roof with a deck on it. They look like a commercial building and are in the 300s. But steel prices have to be rising as lumber is, so I don't see them staying cheaper than CBS with wood trusses for long.

I think more than a few of these people should be looking near Detroit or Arkansas.
