Oh stop the shame train.... if not for the gated communities providing jobs to these “poorer class of people” as you say just where would they be? Most of these individuals are grateful for the jobs and opportunity to better their lives and the lives of their children. Quite a few do side jobs in these gated communities to make extra cash. It’s a win/win for both worker and homeowner.

Actually the cost of a home in the gated communities do that. If you cannot afford to live there, you don't generally live here.

The gates are much like locks on your home, or airport security, they are meant to keep the honest people honest.

True story: I just discovered recently that a local gated community issues "ID badges" for entry. Homes go up to the 15mm range in this area which is walled/fenced yet also on the water. Lots of guards roaming around, most seemed armed.

Irony: YOU NEED NO CREDENTIALS OTHER THAN A DRIVERS LICENSE TO GET THE ACCESS BADGE! They don't even confirm why you are getting the badge or who you plan to visit. So while you could jump a fence, or simply paddle a canoe up to a dock the real crafty ones would pay the money to get a badge which you swipe yourself at the gate to gain access! Now think of someone who steals a badge or even finds one (literally thousands of them out there) and how they can now access this huge community at will.

I can't afford the 15mm homes but I can certainly afford the lower end of the spectrum in there and would never consider paying $700 a month in HOA dues for the "gated" community experience considering they essentially don't stop anyone.

chaulkitup No shame intended just fact . Rich folks do not care care of other rich folks properties . Its a lower income class , I know I learned the carpentery trade working in Port Royal fresh out of high school back in the mid '70's . No different today.

City Guy 997s You know you can still pay that same high HOA monthly fee for a lower end million dollar home in a non gated commuity too . You'll just hand it directly to the lawn care company you use to keep your property as nice as the Jones ! ha

Noisiest place to live in collier county ? Might be Port Royal . Theres always mowers ,weed eaters and blowers running around you and if not those builders are knocking down an old home or two or three to start a new home with the POW , POW , POW of a pile driver for weeks on end maybe months on end today with todays version of a mega mansion . Last one I ran down there was a small for the day 9,800 sq ft vacation home . To many years of first hand knowledge .

Those days are 23 years behind me now .

And why shouldn't they? Why should anyone have to listen to your envious drivel? Get your own things.

Gated communities provide senior citizens with money a feeling of security. A community being gated serves somewhat as a deterrent for the dumbest criminals, although it will not stop a determined criminal.
