It’s about reducing or slowing the droplets that contain the virus. It’s not about preventing all airflow.
That’s why it’s more helpful for an infected person to wear a mask than a non-infected one.
If we didn’t have asymptomatic spread it wouldn’t matter, because sick people would know to stay home.. But as we do, and it’s been documented, having everyone wear masks and social distancing helps reduce the transmission rate.
If the Rt > 1, this means that every infected person spreads it to more than 1 person.
Let’s say Rt=2.
This means 2 spread to 4, who then spread to 8, 16, 32, 64 and so on. This is how you get community spread.
You want to get Rt < 1 so the spread slows and dies out.
No magic here. Just science.
I don’t know what else to say Mark other then to keep repeating myself that these cheap paper and cloth mask everyone is wearing don’t reduce the spread like you think, sorry.. I wish they did because we would be done with all this already. You say science backs your claims but I say it’s just the media.

The only thing that would convince me that these cheap paper and cloth masks work is if the number of new cases slowed down dramatically, yet it’s the opposite the number of new cases are growing. Clearly we have community spread, I think we would both agree on that, but as far as slowing the community spread haha, yea wishful thinking with those masks. How are these mask mandates really working out so far honestly, would you say B+, A- ??? Along with crushing thousands of small businesses and lives in the process because of unnecessary shut downs?

Ask yourself this - if masks don’t work, they why isn’t Tokyo the epicenter? Tokyo is one of the most densely populated places on the planet. They’ve been wearing masks for decades to help navigate the pollution from the jammed packed cars. So one would think that C19 would absolutely roll through Tokyo without any obstruction.....except for one thing - the mask!!

Second, I'm COVID negative, with antibodies, which means I'm immune, I can't transmit what I don't have.....duh...by "droplets".....people are more likely to pick up nasty viruses handling money at the bank or atm, or gas station handle, then not washing their OWN freekin hands, or using a spray afterwards....even then, the virus doesn't live very long on many of these surfaces....

Wanna wear a "fairly good" mask? then wear a n95 or a respirator like you painting a car in a paint booth...LOL
ANd what's really really dumb is when I see a single driver in a vehicle wearing one of the Chinee masks....lol.....or worse yet, I saw a fool riding a bike outside with one of these masks on, then I saw a younger couple walking around our lake (er, outside lol) also wearing these awful cheap blue masks.
Now that's stupid AND drinking the kool-aid of unfounded fear.
Face it, most people , the vast majority of people ARE NOT DYING with this particular virus....and certainly not dying without many other underlying physical conditions....e.g. immuno compromised, diabetes, very HBP, heart disease, surgical complications, cancer, lung disease, COPD, liver disease, drug interactions, shingles, etc.
Yes, the virus is very real, so is influenza and many other viruses...yep, but must ain't dying BECAUSE of it.
BTW, please understand that "blowing out a candle" is not congruent to a sneeze or powerful "hacking cough"

Skeered? don't go out

After handling door knobs? use a alcohol spray
Smoking cigs or dope? stop and don't go out

I hear people say if you don’t wear a mask then you should not be entitled to health care if you get sick from Covid. Fair enough I say, you also shouldn’t be entitled to health care then if you get sick from Covid and smoke cigarettes. In fact anyone who smokes cigarettes should not be entitled to any health care ever regardless if they catch Covid or not.

Yet, some smugly pronounce that people are overreacting; that Covid is no more dangerous than the flu; and that masks provide little or no protection to anyone. In fact, science has shown that masks provide crucial preventive benefits, primarily to others but also to the wearer. But people who follow the opinions of the world's most renowned disease specialists are labelled ”sheep” because they should, instead, follow the medical advice of QAnon or a politician who, for purely political reasons, refuses to wear a mask and has made mask-wearing a Democrat/Republican issue. The reality is that the elderly and those with underlying conditions cannot tell whether maskless people are infected or not and, consequently, they try not to visit businesses unless absolutely necessary, thus impeding the economic recovery that motivated the politician's unscientific views.

Reinfections, although still relatively unusual, are occurring every day and will likely accelerate as more time passes from the initial infection dates. Those who rationalize their maskless behavior because they were previously infected and have immunity need to rethink things. Go to the CDC website, or another legitimate scientific website, and do some heavy reading.

It is sad that so many people are dying. I have a theory mask are actually making things worse because it’s giving people a false sense of security of protection thus more people are going out in public thinking they are safe with their 20 cent paper mask..
If government officials actually told the public mask don’t prevent the spread you would see many more people avoiding public places and social distancing NATURALLY, without even the government having to enforce
shutdowns.
With the continuing rising numbers of deaths and cases mask are losing more and more credibility everyday. The counter argument that there would be even more cases if we didn’t wear mask no longer holds any merit because like I said the government has given permission for people to go around with a false sense of security thinking mask actually work, thus actually helping the virus spread.
The government was in a tough spot because they obviously wanted to prevent hospitals getting over crowded but at the same time they had to keep the economy open. Even before Covid our economy was already in bad shape and in a big bubble with record public and personal debt. There was no way like we all saw our economy could last a prolonged shutdown or the bubble would pop. So after the feds blew even more air in the already massive bubble and lowered interest rates even though they were suppose to normalize rates years ago, the government did the next best thing and gave people a false sense of security with these mask and hoped for the best.
We are obviously in a lose lose situation, no one is really better off from Covid except maybe Amazon. All jokes aside, this has been tough obviously on our health workers, our service workers and lower wage workers, and elderly people who now live in perpetual fear everyday and are afraid to even leave their house.
Hopefully we are through this sooner then later.

Please don't make reckless statements not based on fact. Saying it doesn't make it so. It is irresponsible.
You are immune...to a degree...from getting the virus (reinfections, although rare, have occurred). It is NOT yet known whether you can still be a carrier and transmit the virus to someone else...thus the need for masks. Let me repeat...it is not yet known if you can still be a CARRIER of the virus and transmit to others.
Let's just say masks don't prevent the spread. There is real life science saying it REDUCES transmission. Please share your factual data to back up your statement that "they don't do much." I will be happy to counter.
Let me ask you a hypothetical question. Let's say you have heart issues. If your doctor said he could provide you with medication that was 85% effective in reducing your chances of having a heart attack, but he couldn't say he could 100% prevent you from having a heart attack, would you take the medication? Think about that...
Finally, while an N95 mask would provide more protection, people are foregoing them so those on the front line have access to them as there aren't enough to go around. Instead they are using alternatives such as those "cheap" Chinese masks.
