Before moving to Naples make sure you will be earning over 100,000.00 a year. Otherwise you need to find another place to live.

Default I'm moving in June

Husband got a job there and has been there for almost 3 years. He bought a small 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo last year for $175,000. We will be looking for something bigger when I get there. Our daughter, who is just graduating college (not moving with me), will be visiting. His sister works for an airline and comes down every few months with her husband. We will be looking at 3 bedrooms.

We only plan to stay in Florida until he retires in about 6 or 7 years and move West (Nevada) where our daughter wants to move.

It's not so tough to find an affordable place to rent in Naples. You can easily find 3+ bedroom condos with amenities within a couple miles of the beach for about $1,200. These are in nice developments.

On the flipside, if you don't mind a condo, there are deals to be had if you're looking to buy. Personally, I would wait at least 6 months to a year to even consider buying.

Here's one example of what's happening. I live in a townhome condo development about three miles from the beach. It's a great location and the units are fairly nice: 2 stories, 3 bed, 3 bath, 1,700 SF; common pool, clubhouse, etc. There are 12 units currently for sale out of about 100. Prices for the same exact unit range with minor differences for renovations range from $215,000 to $389,000. That's right. At the height of the boom in 2005, the largest sale was about $369,000. Some people are clueless. Anyhow, the unit for $215,000 is now under contract. It's only a matter of time before motivated sellers bring the comps down. We are nowhere near the bottom and that's why I would wait to buy until things shake out a bit.

Thks for info. I really want to rent 2/2 as I need my cash for bus. startup.
I live in the panhandle of Fl. right now near Destin. I know about hurricanes.
I looking for a simple place in a descent neighborhood away from the beach. I have a child that is going into middle school. She has done well in a good school system here. I have another that is starting college. What side of town should I stay away from. Thks again for your input. I will be moving there in Sept.07

Here are links to the latest FCAT tests results (which are benchmark tests in Florida) for grades 6, 7 and 8. You'll have to scroll down to Collier County Schools:

Then here are the district maps showing where you want to live to be able to attend each school (some boundaries have recently changed so you may want to verify):

you don't need to earn 100k to live in Naples. Just be prepared for traffic to triple in the winter months....yes I did say triple the traffic! Tamiami Trail, Airport Pulling Rd, Goodlette, Pine Ridge, Vanderbilt, etc...all get stacked up.

my company had an office on 5th Avenue South in Old Naples and I'd be out there a few times a week.
