Honestly? Just ask. Hotels offer discounts if you're a Triple A member, part of AARP, have certain kinds of insurance, work for a corporation, you name it.

A good hotel will always let you haggle down (though I myself never go beyond asking about AAA, as I don't like to seem pushy). In a bad economy, they'll likely let you haggle down significantly. Just be nice about it, and you should be ok.

Oh, and one other tip: Always book via the hotel directly. You'll be more likely to get discounts, and the hotel itself won't have to pay a chunk of your money to a third party as a commission.

[NOTE: I can only speak for your average hotel that caters to families and travelers. I don't know how big resorts and places like Opryland handle things.]

And here's a bit of trivia for you...the federal or govt "discounts" are usually their highest price..Apparently they think the govt is picking up the tab, which usually is not the case....

Bnsilly:
I don't know about that. Highest rates are generally called your "rack" rates. Being a government employee should always get you a discount off rack, provided you have a government/military ID.

Some hotel chains offer bigger discounts for certain kinds of insurance (such as Farm Bureau) and certain corporations, simply because those rates have been negotiated. If you're trying get a business to send you 20 rooms, you're likley to drop your rates for them so that they pick you.
