I am from Bowling Green, KY and am wanting to earn a B.A. or B.F.A. in photography but want to stay pretty close to home.

The nearest school is Watkins and I can't find much on the internet about its reputation or atmosphere.

If any of you have ANY insight whatsoever, into this school, it would be MUCH appreciated!! Also, if you know of any other nearby schools that have a B.A. or B.F.A. program for photography, that would also be helpful. I gotta get outta BG!!

Thanks so much
-Steph

Go to MTSU! Much cheaper and I dare say the program is better.

I have a friend that went there, I'll ask him about it.

The creative atmosphere you'd expect. I've only had experience with the film school side, but it seems well-run. Right off the freeway, which is nice. Spotty neighborhood. You have nice hotels, Metro Center business park, Titans practice field, Cadillac dealership, etc., but the surrounding area is iffy at best.

Good reputation with growing attendance.

Good luck wherever you go!

First thought: Expensive

One of my good friends from school was into photography and journalism and attended WKU there in your town. A few years later he landed the Editor job of a prominent nationwide magazine. Have you thought about WK?

My daughter is going to be going there in the fall majoring in grahic design. I've asked my coworker who attends there for film, he said it is expensive but all the programs are are great and the students produce nice work. The school is small, that could be good or bad, depending on what you want. I've never had any problems driving over to Metro center going to businesses in the area. Have you went to one of their open houses?

Also the few students I know currently attending are always getting job offers and internships from other businesses, so i'm ASSUMING they have a decent reputation in the area.

Yes I definitely considered WKU but the PJ classes were hard to get into and I want to do more art photography as opposed to JUST photojournalism

But you are correct, they have the #1 photojournalism program in the country

Again...I would seek out MTSU. If you're wanting to go the art route, their art program is pretty impressive. The art department moved into the old Todd Library not long ago. It's an amazing space. You could easily take Photography courses and art courses. Explain the route you're wanting to go, and the professors there will easily tailor assignments and projects to help you pursue that course of study.

As an MTSU Alumni (2002 BFA Painting/Graphic Design) I see portfolios and work from a lot of programs in the Middle Tennessee area...I still say MTSU is consistently cranking out some of the best work. Don't mean to disrespect any other programs, just being honest. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
