I currently live in the NYC metro area and I can no longer afford to live here.

I would be interested in a new construction condo or townhouse, in a safe neighborhood with decent shopping and activities for semi-seniors who still work.

I',m told Murfreesboro is very reasonable, but what's it like to live in?

I have no kids, so I don't care about schools -

Any ideas? Thanks for your suggestions!

Murfreesboro will probably be a change for you if you're living in NYC proper. It's far enough away from Nashville to be its own city with its own identity, but it does still have a suburban feel to it. The largest (by undergraduate enrollment) university in the state is located there (Middle TN State Univ). There's a major interstate (I 24) that runs right through it, making it easy to get to Nashville to the northwest or Chattanooga to the southeast.

I feel certain that there are some 55+ active lifestyle communities in that area, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. Maybe someone else can chime in. I know the Del Webb community in Mt. Juliet (Providence) is very popular as well. But that's due east of Nashville.

As for shopping, there is a new huge shopping/commercial district called the Avenue just northeast of downtown M'boro that is very nice. This city has seen a lot of growth over the last 5-10 years and it has become a more attractive place to live as a result.

A couple of things to consider...if you're used to taking public transportation prepare to be disappointed. You really must have a vehicle to get around anywhere in Middle TN (Nashville included). And things are much more spread out here than in NYC or any major urban area.

That said, M'boro is a great town. Definitely worth a look. I'd also consider looking at Franklin, Brentwood, Hendersonville, and Mt. Juliet.

Good luck and let us know if you have more questions.
