We are pretty set now that we are moving this summer to Franklin. I am wondering if there are significant price differences in grocery stores. I shop at the commissary here and Walmart only for produce as the commissary produce is terrible. I am concerned that our food costs will go through the roof in Franklin...they are alread very high now. Any tips on where to shop?

I'm not one to shop a zillion stores. There is a walmart here, but dealing with the people isn't worth saving 50 cents on a box a cereal to me. The major chains are Publix, Kroger and Harris Teeter. I think Publix is expensive but probably because I don't shop it as my main store regularly. I think Kroger is probably the cheapest. I shop primarily Harris Teeter because I try to feed my family mostly organic and it has the best prices and variety.

Kroger definitely is the cheapest, though I do notice WalMart will beat them occasionally. If you go early in the morning, WalMart is not bad.

The one thing transplants can't get used to here is the fact that there is a tax on food in Tennessee.

I remember being shocked at the food tax. You can get bread, produce, dairy, meat, etc. at farmers markets, though. Better quality!

Use coupons combined with B1G1 free at Publix and you can routinely save 60%+. I usually spend about $40 for a bill that was originally $100+. IMHO, people who complain about high grocery prices are just too lazy to put some effort into saving money.

I don't find many coupons for the items I need for special diets.

Does Aldi carry allergen-free food items (no gluten, soy, dairy, nuts, etc)?

I've never been to Aldi but it has the same owners as Trader Joe's, just different market segments. There is a Trader Joes in Green Hills

Both Kroger & Harris Teeter have a card program. The Kroger cards can be used to get discount gas at Shell stations. Not all Kroger stores sell gas.

IMHO you may pay more at Publix or Harris Teeter but get better service. Kroger may have the most store brand items. A key difference from other markets is the premium price for Purity dairy items. They may compare with Dean's dairy in other markets. Trader Joe's is a good alternative to Whole Foods. Both Target & WalMart have some groceries depending on the quantities you need.
