Can anyone suggest where a family of four can volunteer, especially during the holiday season? We have two children, both under the age of 12, and would like to help out in any way we can with upcoming events, assisting others, or anything where we could be of service.

We live in Sumner county and don't mind going into Nashville to help.

Thanks for your advice...

Show Hope in Franklin has a page on the web site where you can get more info about volunteering. Show Hope is Mary Beth & Steven Curtis Chapman's nonprofit to help families adopt children.

Hands-On Nashville (http://www.hon.org/HomePage/index.php/home.html - broken link) is the first place I'd go. They have a "Volunteer Classifieds" section so you can check to see what is needed, etc.

I know the Union Rescue Mission downtown is always in need of volunteers for things. You might call them to see what is available...working in the kitchen...working on a loading dock, etc.

Finally, I'd call the Sumner Co. United Way to see if they have anything local.

HUGE fan of Hands-On Nashville (http://www.hon.org/HomePage/index.php/home.html - broken link) as well. They were basically created to answer the question of "how can we help" here in Nashville. Direct link to their 'Holiday Volunteer Guide' PDF: http://www.hon.org/AboutUs/index.php/docs/HolidayVolunteerGuide_2010.pdf (broken link)

First, I want to thank you for trying to raise social conscious, service minded, children. Since both of your kids are under the age of 12, that somewhat limits what you can do as a family for liability reasons. I would contact the local nursing homes in your area to see if your family could come & spend time with the residents and handout candy canes for the Holiday Season. If you're thinking of something else, send me a message & we'll try to figure out something more tailored to what you're looking for.
