I think my cat is diabetic and we don't have a vet yet. Any recommendations? I need to take him to one soon. There is a vet in Grassland, has anyone been there? Don't mind driving further if need be. Thanks for any help!

There is a cat only vet on Bell Rd right near the intersection of Bell Rd. and Murfreesboro Rd. Not sure if they are any good, but all they do is cats.

I took 2 of my cats to Premier VetCare in Smyrna last week. It was just for their annual checkup but they were really nice. The price was comparable to our old vet...$90 total. That was my first visit.

We take our cats and new puppy to Southside Animal Hospital on Nolensville Road, near the Old Hickory intersection. They are great!

Not going to give you a vet suggestion but just some info. If your cat is diabetic then you might want to be armed with a bit of information from newer studies about correct diets for felines and why there are so many issues cropping up from diabetes, urinary tract problems, obesity etc.

Take a look at these two links and try to understand the link between your cat's diet and diabetes. They were the two most common links we gave when I worked at a dog/cat holistic supply store. The second is actually a cat vet and is a real eye opener if you've never really looked at the ingredients in cat foods and why they're absolutely wrong for an obligate (meaning ONLY meat) carnivore.

I can recommend from first hand experience, Battleground Animal Hospital in Franklin.
They have treated both of my cats well and the staff is always very attentive.

Best of luck to you and your furry friend.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Looks like preliminary tests are showing he IS diabetic so wanted to thank sapphos for the article. Read it once quickly and will read it again before we do anything besides try to eat better. Finding out the calories in cat food is like finding a parking place in front of the White House. BIG secret I guess. Difficult to be healthy (or have a healthy pet) when the information is so hard to find. Anyway, thanks from me and my furry friend!

Years ago we had a diabetic cat. In addition to the diet adjustments we had to give her an insulin shot daily. Which was easier than you'd think. It was a small needle and we only had to lift up the loose skin at the back of the neck and slide the needle underneath the skin. She never reacted unless we got careless and hit something solid!

I haven't been there since we moved from that side of town, so I don't know if he's still there, but the vet at Franklin Animal Hospital (I think that's the name -- the one on Franklin Road north of Moores Lane) was big into nutrition and, for lack of a better term, alternative pet health care in addition to the normal fix-it doctoring.
