Hello!
I am interested in getting an elementary teaching position in Nashville starting in September (I understand there are school closings and cuts, just like up here). Any pointers would be helpful in terms of what an average starting pay is with a Masters degree; what to expect when looking for a position; and how to approach principals (via email, phone, letter or in person).
Anything would be appreciated as I would love to move to this amazing city!

Metro Nashville Public Schools usually start around the 13-19th of August. The surronding counties start closer to August 1st.

There are budget cuts, but those don't usually effect teachers as directly as they do other positions with in the schools. There are no schools planning on closing due to budget cuts.

I could not tell you the best way to land a job at at Metro school because people have got them in several different ways. Each individual pricipal has his or her own way of hiring. Just make sure you have all your information submitted to the board of education first and go from there.

Here is a link to the Metro Nashville Public School Teacher Pay Scale for 2009-2010 which I found on google. I can't imagine it has increased very much since this was published:

Also, the following is a news story which, near the bottom, lists starting salaries for Nashville as compared to certain other Tennessee districts:

If you search on this board, you will find several posts about this topic and things I have responded to. I moved here 2 years ago for an elementary teaching job. In April, schools started posting their openings until about mid June. From my experience, most principals start to interview and hire and want it finished by mid June, since school starts in August. Most areas you have to apply by county and then contact the principal of the school you want to work in. I would start researching the applying requirements so when the jobs are posted, you are ready.
