I'm visiting Franklin in a couple of weeks and I'll be coming from Memphis on I-40. The most direct route would appear to be I-440 to 65 south but I was wondering if there is a "better" way. Taking 96 in from the west looks tempting... Any suggestions? I don't mind a more scenic route even if it takes a bit more time.

Thanks in advance

I would absolutely take Hwy 96. It's a pleasant drive.

In fact, it's probably quicker than taking the interstate, because you cut off a good 20 or so miles.

I agree with nashvols. 96 is a very nice ride.

That's how we always go to Memphis. I never take I-40 before Fairview.

Thanks. You never know about these "shortcuts" from just looking at the map.

Let me ask this follow up traffic question: what are the pros and cons of taking 440 versus staying on 40 through Nashville. Any real difference?

Not a huge difference. 440 is certainly quicker....depends on if you want to take a "scenic" detour and see downtown. Not the best skyline view from there, though. You would get a decent glance, though.

When I have time, I like going on the north side and the east side of the downtown interloop to get good views of the Nashville skyline. I guess that would be I-65 (the north side) and I-24 (the east side).

Just don't get on 440 headed east between I-65 and I-40 during rush hour. It really gets backed up as people head out toward the airport and east side of town.

I drive to/from Memphis all the time. From 40 you can take 840 to 100 to 96 or you can take exit 182, stop for a Dunkin Donuts coffee, gas up pretty cheap and go on into Franklin.

Personally, my favorite view is the brief distance on westbound I-40 (solo I-40) along the south loop between the I-24 and I-65 interchanges. It gives a very tall perspective of downtown (to be more specific...right around 4th Ave).

Plus, the adult bookstore is more pleasing on the eyes than the metal scrapyard.
