Family seeking single family home/condo/townhouse (Franklin, Brentwood: rent, school)

My husband and I will be moving to Nashville, with our 10 mo old son, in the next few months. My husband has several relatives there; his grandparents live in Franklin, and he has aunts and uncles in Brentwood, E Nashville, and downtown. We are interested in renting for the first year or two. We are a late 20's/early 30's couple, and since school for our son will not be a concern for several years, we are more interested in living in an urban, but family friendly area. We actually love all the various areas his family live in. Our main criteria is to not be too far from them (we don't want to live 45 min from Franklin for instance) and we do not want an apt. We would rather rent a single family home or only share one wall in something like a condo or townhouse. We don't want anyone beneath us or above us, etc.
I have looked through a lot of threads on here already, but it seems like they are usually about apts. We are not really sure where to begin our search, since we don't have a target area.
We will be in the area to look in person at the beginning of August.
