Hello out there!!
My family and I just found out today that we will be relocating to the Smyrna area from Ohio in SIX WEEKS!! We are planning a visit this coming weekend to house hunt and scout out the area, but will some of you be so kind as to fill us in on the area, such as what are good neighborhoods, and where we may want to stay away from...and crime issues....the elementary schools....things to do/see??
Thank you very much!!

I don't know much about the Smyrna area . . but you might want to consider Nolensville. It's in Williamson County and will have better schools.

I just searched the forum - box in upper right hand corner . . just above the posts? Just pop SMYRNA is there and there are a lot of posts. Forum is slow due to holidays. Here is link to a recent one:

Best of luck with the move!

I can't attest to the schools yet since our daughter isn't in school. But I was told the schools here are for the most part, good school. I believe Blackman is highly sought after.

As for Smyrna as a whole, I love it here. Crime is everywhere but I do feel safe and have not had any issues in the year we have been here. There was a crime data base somewhere...I will post if can find it again. I believe most reported crimes were burgurlies and robberies.

I highly recommend Smyrna due to it small time feel but with plenty to do. I am from a small town so I was nervous about moving here but it is just the right size. It has plenty of shops and eateries but close enough to Murfreesboro or Nashville if you want something different.

There's a wide variety of homes in the Smyrna area - it would help to know your price range. Also, what age at your children and are extra-curricular activities such as sports a hue part of their lives?

Thank you everyone, for you input!! I appreciate it so much! I will def. try and find the other Smyrna threads, too!! Believe me, this was the LAST thing I expected to be doing over the holidays, so I understand the forum being slow, too! LOL
As for what we are looking for in terms of a home, we are needing 3 BR, at least 1 BA (LOL), and we really want to stay under $900 a month for rent. Oh, and pets must be OK!! We have a couple that are long term family members and it's just not an option to give them up. Some other ammenities we would LOVE to see on our home would be a fenced yard, CHA, and a basement would be nice!! But those things are just perks, at this point.
My boys are both in elementary school, and are in 2nd & 4th grade. They are VERY inbolved in extra-cirricular sports....mostly baseball and football. And just they LOVE to do things like ride bikes, play backyard sports with the neighbor kids, skate/skateboard, climb trees, get dirty....LOL....all the usual stuff boys like to do! That is why a safe neighborhood, with some other kids and a good yard would be important to us.
Again, I really do appreciate the input and I will look forward to additional posts.

I live in Smyrna, relocated here 2 years ago from the northeast. The schools here are I have heard are above average..) the taxes are lower than Nolensville/Williamson County. Crime as was said is everywhere, but lower here in my observations.
There are numerous parks in Smyrna as well, with lots of paths and open areas. Baseball is played almost all year round, and football is HUGE here too. Smyrna High School football is regularly a playoff school and a contender for state championships.
Anything else you want to know..just ask.

I stay in Syrmna. and good luck finding a basement. Average cost for a house about $1000-$1100 for a 3 bedroom 2 bath.

Its nice you will love it and schools are great. The lake extends out here as well.

But coming from Ohio things are going to be slow for you. People take their time everywhere and most cant drive.. its going to be frustrating with you coming from ohio. Some things people do your going to say WHY and the heck did he just do that.Backwards Like for instance one time receipt paper ran out in store and clerk wanted to write down my items and and signt he papaer as my receipt, I said why dont you just change the paper,. She said , well i guess your right, Id idnt think of that...LOl Duhhhh

BAHAHAHA!! Yeah, we actually, we only lived in Ohio for 2 years. We moved there from North Alabama, so I know EXACTLY what you are talking about! =) I know, it was the same deal in AL with the basements, few and far between, but we actually had one down there, so I am hoping to get that lucky again!! Thank you very much for your reply!! Are there any neighborhoods/communities we should just flat avoid??

For the record, property taxes are higher in Rutherford/Smyrna than Williamson. In fact, the total tax rate in Brentwood per $100 is $2.70, while in Smyrna it's $3.2247. In Nolensville, it's $2.41. But I still think Smyrna is a better fit for the OP.

Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury - Division of Property Assessments - Property Tax Rates (http://www.comptroller1.state.tn.us/PAnew/LR.asp?W=11 - broken link)

It's a common misperception, but I couldn't let it go. Because housing costs more in Williamson, everyone thinks the taxes are higher. They aren't.
