Hi all. This is my first post on this site! I'm a 24-year-old single female with no kids. I live about 20 minutes outside of New York City and I'm not tied down to a job or school at the moment. I am strongly considering moving to Nashville next year. I have a few general questions:

1. I hope to complete a Masters in Education at a college or university in Nashville. Any suggestions for good programs? Also, how difficult is it to find a teaching job (elementary education) in Tennessee?

2. I would like to settle down soon. In New York most people don't get married and have children until after they turn 30. Is TN similar? different? I realize this is a relative question, just trying to gauge!

3. I am not religious. I don't attend church. Will I have a difficult time fitting in? Meeting people? How religious is the culture down there?

4. I am a huge fan of blues music, country music, bluegrass, etc. Am I right to assume that I'll have a lot of opportunities to see great live music?

5. What is a reasonable price for a studio or one-bedroom apartment in downtown Nashville? What areas should I stay away from?

Thank you so much!!! Any answers you can provide are appreciated.

1. I hope to complete a Masters in Education at a college or university in Nashville. Any suggestions for good programs? Also, how difficult is it to find a teaching job (elementary education) in Tennessee? It is a growing area. I know Williamson County has been adding about 800 kids a year to the system so they are obviously hiring. I'm not sure how competitive it is. Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee State Univ., Tenn. State Univ, Trevecca, etc all have education programs

2. I would like to settle down soon. In New York most people don't get married and have children until after they turn 30. Is TN similar? different? I realize this is a relative question, just trying to gauge! Just my observation but I have more peers with kids than I did in the northeast. I was the first of my friends to have a baby and I was 30, most of my mommy friends were 5+ years older than I am

3. I am not religious. I don't attend church. Will I have a difficult time fitting in? Meeting people? How religious is the culture down there?
It is shocking and it takes an adjustment. You'll see garden centers with signs thanking jesus, etc... but there are lots of folks who don't go to church. I've discovered by telling people we are catholic we don't get invited to church
4. I am a huge fan of blues music, country music, bluegrass, etc. Am I right to assume that I'll have a lot of opportunities to see great live music?
lots of chances to hear music...all types not just country but also blue grass, rock, etc.
5. What is a reasonable price for a studio or one-bedroom apartment in downtown Nashville? What areas should I stay away from? If I was young and single I'd want to be in the Gulch/12S/HillsboroVillage area or out in Bellvue

Thank you so much!!! Any answers you can provide are appreciated.
my answers are in bold

Of course coming to visit you will love it. Living here and dealing with the stuff that goes on here and visiting is 2 different things..

That's true no matter where you move.

I think the transplants who "hate" it here are the ones who expect things to be just like they are where they moved from. No matter where you move, you're going to have to adjust to SOMETHING.

Yes, they are two different things, but all places have their issues.
I have never been to Nashville, so I probably have no room to speak; but she looks like a fun, inexpensive, fairly cosmopolitan city for a young single gal looking for a place to call home and set roots for a family.

What "stuff" exactly? Thinking about a move there as well, so I'm seriously interested in your take...

That goes both ways. I've lived in NYC all my life and I fricking hate it. I'm itching to get the heck out even though I've been comfortably well-established in the East Village since the 80's and can easily afford to stay if I so chose.

What makes you presume me or the OP would hate Nashville more?

What makes you presume Nashville isn't better than NYC for the OP's situation?

What makes you presume that your tastes are the same as everyone else's?

What makes you presume you know what's better for people you have never met and know nothing about?

NYC sucks ass for raising a family, it's also not a very politically tolerant place anymore despite what people prefer to think (another reason why I don't want to raise kids there). It's great if you're single, wanting to stay that way and you have tons of money to burn on an inflated cost of living, $4000 rents, and overpriced entertainment. But once you grow up, things change.
