You can't go wrong if you're staying downtown-can walk to most places, although it's a little touristy, but everyone should visit downtown Nashville once.
I like Big River for food/sports bar.
Mexican-drive out to Brentwood Local Taco, or Edgetown's Taco Mamacita, or Belmont's Cha Cha's-been to all 3 and yum!
Divey bars-Paradise Park downtown, Broadway Brewhouse Midtown (personal fave)
downtown Tootsie's and Flying Saucer always recommended, but never been.
shopping...avoid Green Hills. Traffic is awful, especially with the holidays.

It's a Greek restaurant, but they serve American food, too...and they do a GREAT breakfast (which is served all day, btw). It's not super cheap...but compared to a lot of sit down restaurants, you do pretty well. Pretty much everything is less than $12, and most of the time you are spending $7-9 per entree. You can get away with less on a smaller breakfast, but that's about it.
Athens is definitely a fantastic place to eat if you're up for it. They were featured on Food Network not too long ago, and definitely deserve it.
If you're looking for a cool spot near downtown to grab a few brews, check out the Beer Sellar on Church St. It's right off the end of that 2nd Ave strip mentioned earlier, and it has a great selection, with an underground sort of atmosphere. It's also right next to the river, if you like walking around by the water.
