My husband and I, and our 3 year old are planning to move to the Nashville are soon. This is going to be a fresh start for us, I've been to Nashville several times throughout my lifetime but my husband has never been. We are moving because the economy and schools here are awful! I know its bad everywhere but where we're from, if you dont get out when you're young you'll be stuck here working at mill making min. wage on food stamps for the rest of your life. We are in our mid 20's and plan to attend college, preferably a community college that offers transfer degrees. We need something affordable because we will both be in college and only working part time. However safety is a big issue.
We also dont want to commute and hour away. We have no idea where to start and need some assistance from someone that has pretty good knowledge of the area. What neighborhood should we look at? We dont want to live in the "ghetto" but we dont need to live in an upscale neighborhood either. thanks

There is Vol State Comm College in Gallatin Volunteer State Community College

You could probably find somewhere reasonable to live around there and a nice place to live.

we were actually looking at Vol state because it offers something my husband is interested in and something for me. as far as work experience, I seem to be a jack of all trades, I've done everything from waiting tables to wireless sales, to dry cleaning, and my husband is ex military and has been working for the state of NC as a correctional officer every since he was discharged 5 years ago. He's wanting to break free from the security business though and get into health care. We were actually thinking about the Hendersonville area because it seems to be about half way between Nashville and the college. Is that a good place, what would be a safe apartment complex to look at? thanks for the responses.

There are several nice apartment complexes in the area on Gallatin Rd between Hendersonville and Gallatin.

Avondale at Kennesaw Farms
Stoneridge Farms at the Hunt Club
Wellington Farms

All of these would be about 5 minutes from Vol State and about 25 minutes from Nashville without traffic.

As far as crime, yes it is a very safe area - particularly this strip between Gallatin and Hendersonville. As far as traffic, it is a heavily traveled road with high speed limits so I'd be wary of walking along/across it.

What sort of healthcare work is your husband interested in (e.g. technology, records management, etc.)? There are several healthcare firms that seem to always be hiring down in the Brentwood/Franklin/Cool Springs area, but those areas are expensive to say the least (great schools though!). Of course, you could always live outside of the area and commute in -
