I have an interview tomorrow night with The Nashville Teaching Fellows to teach in a low income school district. I was wondering if anyone has any advice about the lower income areas/schools. Also, the general cost of living. We will be moving (if I get the job) from the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX area.

Thanks so much!

Here is a cost of living comparison calculator:

A decent apartment will set you back around $1000. The rental market is a bit tight right now with a lot of newcomers moving into the city. Utilities might set you back $200? Depends on how much electricity you use and cable/internet needs. No income tax. There is a sales tax of 9.25% which is assessed on food as well. I think car insurance is reasonable but I moved from CT where it was higher.

Best of luck with your interview!

Here is a link to our running thread on Nashville Teaching Fellows.

I would be careful about moving your family here from Dallas for one of these jobs. The most recent posts on that thread are very revealing.

My friends who are still teaching in Nashville have not had good success with NTF teachers. You probably will get hired, as it seems Metro Nashville is almost exclusively hiring NTF candidates now. But you have to sign a 2-year contract. Two of my teacher friends are very frustrated with the program because they have to mentor the "graduates" for their first year or two, help bolster their lack of classroom management skills, then go through all of it again since most of them move on as soon as the 2 years are up, using NTF as a stepping stone or to bide time until another corporate job comes available.

I admire your desire to teach where the kids will need good teachers most. I just want to be sure you perform your own due diligence about this program before you uproot your family because of it.

Where did you get the idea that there is a 2-year contract? Are you getting NTF confused with TFA?
