You can play around with this. Keep in mind though that I have heard that Memphis reports each crime as a separate incident. So an armed robbery that invovles B &E would count there as two crimes, not just one. I don't know if Nashville does that or not.
Thats interesting, definitely something to look at. Thank you

Crime rates for cities are a little like looking at median home price for a city.......limited usefulness for someone trying to make an idividual decision. The more important question would be how safe (or in the case of home prices, how expensive) is the area that I want to be in. Saying the Nashville crime rate has any bearing on what someone living in Green Hills sees is a gross misuse of the data. In general, Nashville is a safe place to live.

Nashville does have a high crime rate. I remember first noticing it back in 2008 on the FBI list and being surprised then at how high it ranked. Just now checked a couple of other sites - will post one link as they both say the same thing:

It does vary some by area - with the safest areas also being the most expensive (but that's true everywhere). And 2012 is shaping up to be "safer" than 2010.

If I'm not mistaken, this list includes the entire metro.

Rankings are obviously still up for debate, but including metro counties really helps Nashville's cause.

Nashville's crime rate has seen a decline over the past decade, though. I'm not sure what Knoxville's is doing, but that may also help explain it. It might surprise some that Nashville actually has about the same murder rate as Knoxville.

Nashville's metro has some high crime spots. I don't know about Knoxville. Outside of inner city Nashville, theres Antioch, Madison, South Nashville, Bordeaux, and Inglewood.

I thought about the metro issue to. I don't know how they do these - by area or per capita. Could make a big difference.

Yes, but those areas are still within Nashville city limits. Knoxville is a bit different because there are a lot of developed and populated areas in Knox County outside of Knoxville.
