I currently live in South Georgia and is considering relocating to Sumner County, Tenn. -- either Gallatin or Westmoreland. What can I expect living in these areas? Can I get information about homeschooling, cost of living, the housing market, outdoors and recreation, are there many walking/bike trails in these areas, the weather, are these good areas for farmer's markets or fresh food stores, and any other information you can offer about these areas.

Westmoreland and Gallatin may share the same county but they are worlds apart. Gallatin is definitely part of Nashville's suburban sprawl whereas Westmoreland is a quintessential small town which is pretty isolated.

Cost of Living will be slower in Westmoreland. If you like snow, believe it or not, Westmoreland actually gets a fair amount more than Gallatin or the rest of the county due to it's location on the highland rim. It's not unusual for school children in Hendersonville & Gallatin to enjoy a rainy day off from school due to snow in the Westmoreland area.

Gallatin offers better walking and biking trails. The city has a pretty impressive greenway that is eventually planned to link up to Hendersonville's near Station Camp. Gallatin's is actually much further along than Hendersonville. Gallatin is also located along Old Hickory Lake, so there are a lot of recreational opportunities there as well.

There is also a farmer's market in Gallatin which operates Spring-Late Fall. For Whole Foods or Trader Joes, you would need to drive to Green Hills in Nashville (35-40 minutes from Gallatin). However, Publix has a pretty good selection of natural and organic products. There is also a store very close to the Gallatin border, in Hendersonville, that sells locally grown produce, dairy, and other items. The name is Hendersonville Produce.

Hope this helps but if you have more questions, feel free to ask! Unfortunately, I can't comment on homeschooling.

We are considering a home in Sumner County also. My concern is I read that the schools started late this year due to budget problems. If the schools are having financial problems there...how bad is it really...how does it effect the teaching of the students....and how concern should I be?
We are looking more into Westmoreland then Gallantin.

Now that you mention snow thought in Westmoreland I am seriously rethinking my decision. I hate snow!!!

Wonder how much snow Smith county gets. LOL

Not all that much more than anywhere else in the area. The only thing to watch for in the more rural areas is that the streets are not going to be salted or plowed. Some major highways will. The interstate certainly will. I imagine Carthage or Gordonsville would be mostly fine...but the more isolated off the beaten path areas could be trouble.

But I stress, it still doesn't snow a lot. It's snowing right now in Nashville as I type this. The trees, cars, rooftops, and mulch have a light cover of snow. The streets and most of the ground do not.

It is more or less your typical Tennessee snow. "Big" snows of 6+ inches are rare.
