This is a nice article in Forbes about the press we've gotten from the NYTs and others and why it is well deserved.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: I love Nashville! I need to find one of my New Yorker friends who is willing to take a week off and come down with me in June! I visited once a few months ago and now I'm hooked on this awesome little city. My friends think I'm crazy for loving "the South" but they have absolutely no idea what they're missing.

Thanks so much for the link! I KNEW there was something about the place . . . Been here almost 3 years - best move I ever made even though I got a lot of strange looks from friends when I told them where I was moving!

I'm sure the "awesome" label is appreciated, but economists and demographers categorize Nashville as a medium sized city or alternatively "2nd tier". I live in a pretty large city and when I see the descriptor "little city" I don't even have to read further to know it's coming from a New Yorker. BTW my girlfriend lives in Aspen, CO and Nashville is gargantuan by comparison.

Question: I was browsing through the Forbes presentation of the 20 fastest growing metros in the country. They do a very nice story on the economic advent of Nashville but they never seem to include the city in these spreads of "top 10' or "top 20", anyone have an idea why? I was looking at the Tennessean a few days ago and there was a story on the well known apartment tycoon there, and him saying that the metro is growing by 40,000 per year. This is a 2.5% population growth which exceeds the figures on some of the metros in that Forbes spread of which Houston was ranked 2 and 4 TX cities got ranked top 20. I don't get it why Nashville isn't in the list.

BTW guys I may have mentioned but I was up there, drove up with my sister from Birmingham for a Christmas party in Forest Hills. I learned a few things, like "dry stack rock wall" and how they are now being recreated, but with mortar core hidden from view. Which is an indicator of a prospering area if people ar going to the trouble of historical recreation to that level. We also did Sunday brunch over in East Nashville, which reminded me very much of doing brunch in Austin, observing the demographics and style. Then we drove through the Gulch and Music Row areas, and eyeballed changes there.

Will mention also that last night I attended a really high end gathering put on by Vanderbilt here for the local supporters and alums. Pretty mind boggling the expansion of the applicant base they are seeing, and the upward shift in the acadenuc percentiles represented. In other words they are competing with the Ivies and the west coast like I never would have thought.

Feb 28 will have been a year since we moved here from Michigan; which is crazy. This entire state is beyond wonderful and it just keeps getting better.
