What time of day/day of the week do you anticipate coming through?

That's really when most of the rush hour traffic is dying down. It can still be heavy, though. There is construction on I-65 @ Trinity Lane, which can be a bit of a mess.

You can certainly take Briley Parkway, but it is a little bit of a detour, plus the stretch from I-40 to I-24 (near the airport) is NOT a freeway, and has traffic lights and a lower speed limit. It's a short stretch, but it could sort of sabotage your potential time savings by avoiding 65 downtown.

I would consider taking Ellington Parkway.

It's the same exit as Briley...but a little tricky because it's actually in between the Briley east and Briley west exits (4 lanes exit). 2 lanes travel onto Ellington.

Ellington is an urban freeway, so no worries about running through low speed limits or traffic lights while you're on it. There's a short stretch (1/4 mile) where you will have to exit the freeway and get back on the interstate.

Take the Spring Street exit (follow the signs for 24). There are a couple of ramps/roads right as you get off. You want to take I-24 East, so you will be taking the cloverleaf exit, which starts UNDER the interstate bridge.

Once on the interstate, you need to make your way over to one of the left two lanes (doesn't have to be immediate, but you don't want to do it at last minute).

The interstate then merges with I-40 east. Once the merge is completed, make your way over to one of the right two lanes, because in 2 miles, 40 and 24 will split again.

I think ignorance is bliss when doing long distance driving. I'd just take 65 to 840 to 24 and not try to do anything tricky. But that's just me . . . .

Most of the time by 9 AM traffic on I-65 S by Trinity Lane is manageable, unless there's been an accident. As long as you stay to the left you'll be fine. That'll be really easy, since you'd be going left at the upcoming split onto I-24 E. Then just follow I-24 through the next couple splits and you'll be golden. It would be way out of your way coming from that direction to take I-65 to 840.

I wouldn't recommend Ellington at 9 AM because the Spring Street exit is always backed up, which would negate any time savings. If you did go that way, I would take the James Robertson exit and make a left at the first light onto Interstate Dr, which offers access to I-24. That way is often a pain, though, because the line for the light backs up sometimes too.

Sometimes out of your way is quicker. I personally hate doing little 2 mile jogs on this road or that. I love that you can drive almost coast to coast on following just ONE highway sign!

Yes, but way out of your way is generally not quicker. If you're coming from the north and you go all the way through town and take 840 on the way out, you go 22 miles out of your way. Taking Briley is about 3 miles out of the way. If you take an alternate route, that's the one to go. And that's just to avoid downtown.

Again...this is assuming the OP is coming from north of town.

I believe that is the case . . . I just prefer EASY to quick! I can't look at maps while driving, have no copilot, hate the GPS lady . . . . What's another 15 minutes? You get to go pass the castle where Taylor Swift filmed her Love Story video????

The main difference is avoiding the downtown loop in traveling from 65 to 24. From 40 to 24 Briley becomes more of a parkway with some traffic lights. May be useful if someone needs to stop for gas or other needs.

Some construction has started between Briley North & Trinity Lane that you can avoid. At this time isn't a big hassle yet. There may also be some construction on I-65 from Franklin down to 840. In both sections, TDOT is adding 1 lane in each direction.

Using 840 to get from 65 to 24 makes very little sense. The distance is too great to save any time. IMHO it may be better to use Old Hickory & make any needed gas stops.
