Just be careful, its not as "safe" as you think it is.

You may be on to something. The other day I saw that Natasha Bedingfield, the pop singer of Top 40 staples like "Unwritten" and "Pocketful of Sunshine" had tweeted the following:

Quote:
Natasha Bedingfield ‏@natashabdnfield
Freshest hipster coffee place in Nashville
Within nanoseconds of Ms. Bedingfield shining her pocketful of sunshine on the Barista Parlor, I could almost hear the collective sighs of disgust reverberating on the east side from my place on the west side. I hear they're all considering packing up and heading to Joelton where they're likely to never be discovered again.

*gasp*

Don't mention it by name!

Also, like others have said, East Nashville is a pretty large area, encompassing many neighborhoods. I laugh when I hear people wanting safe walkable neighborhoods and people posting on here don't mention Lockeland Springs and Eastwood Neighbors. These are probably two of the MOST walkable neighborhoods in Nashville and are very safe. They are so much more walkable than neighborhoods like Sylvan Park, 12 South, or "Berry Hill" it's off the charts. You can walk/ride your bike to so many restaurants, shops, music venues, Shelby Park, downtown Nashville...etc...only Hillsboro Village is in the same league as far as walkable and safe neighborhoods.
I decided to park and take my dog for a long walk from Edgefield through East End & Lockeland Springs to Eastwood Neighbors this beautiful spring-like afternoon while enjoying a cup of coffee. I must say that I have to agree with you wholeheartedly about the walkability through that stretch of East Nashville. I think the new Shoppes at Fatherland are fantastic. I'm also anxious to see what kind of impact the next phase of the Walden development will have on Eastland Avenue. Overall, I loved the synergy and how people were greeting us from their yards or porches as we walked by.

I also enjoyed my coffee from the Barista Parlor and found the place to be really neat. It is a former auto repair shop that's been turned into a large, open air coffee shop with the prep area smack in the middle for customers to observe. It did take them a while to prepare my coffee, but I'm not sure if it was due to their prep techniques or if they just forgot about me since I didn't look like a member of Arcade Fire. Will definitely be back though.

BTW, for the OP, the answer would be "yes." East Nashville is probably as close as it'll get to a hipster paradise in TN.
