This is according to The Daily Beast. Nashville is ranked the 6th best city in the country combining "jobs and culture." Cities in this list "are places where people can enjoy the cultural amenities and attitudes of 'progressive' blue states but in a distinctly red-state environment of low costs, less regulation, and lower taxes."

In addition, they "...have lured companies and people from more expensive regions, notably California and the Northeast, by being not only culturally rich but also amenable to building a career, buying a home and, ultimately, raising a family in relative comfort."

And all this time I thought we lured those companies by being under-educated, impoverished states where companies can pay comparatively low wages, provide minimal benefits, rape the public coffers, and not have to worry about pesky things like unions and workers' rights.

Me, too. I guess it depends on your field. I have a friend from Raleigh, NC, one of the cities on the list. She had a good job in Raleigh but move to Los Angeles for family reasons and got a good job there. This was before the bottom fell out of the economy. She recently moved back to NC and is having a very hard time finding a decent job - and her last position was as the financial administrator - she has decades of accounting experience.

I moved back to Nashville for all of 2012 from Los Angeles and thankfully worked part time for my LA employer. Part time on LA $ is decent in Nashville. I tried finding a job there but the pay for my field was laughably low. I got a promotion into management and moved back to LA. Yes, the cost of living out here is higher - but not that much higher. It's sad because I wanted to stay in Nashville.

That is what I've been saying for a year which people don't believe. Thank goodness I'm getting paid California money in Nashville.

I think rents and other housing costs are going up faster than wages. I dont suppose this is exclusive to Nashville though, it's a national trend.
