Because, I don't think a lack of talent is the reason.

And I just heard this today, a little abstract but I like rap that doesn't always talk about the hood.

Yelawolf is from Alabama and Grits is Christian (and correct me if I'm wrong but not even relevant anymore to Christian hip hop). The other two I'm not familiar with.

“When I lived in Antioch, they’d bus us down to the projects in Nashville to go to school and everything just started clicking with me with rap music and in life,” Yelawolf said. “I felt the connection, these kids had the same problems that I had at home. And the weed, the dope...”

His time in Nashville made him a rapper. And GRITS are Christian rap, but ooh ahh is a song that people who listen to regular rap can listen to.

In a word: yes.

Same can be said (to a lesser extent) about a number of other genres.

Just go to the general U.S. or city v. city forums on here -- many comments about Nashville nightlife are immediately linked with 'if you like Country' or 'but I don't like Country music'...most people (even some locals) are completely unaware of the 'other' side of the music scene. But I think it's changing a little bit.

Well, that and the historically small black population.

Don't really agree. Im black and I just moved from the Bay Area. Nashville seems a lot blacker to me than Oakland although its an illusion as they are pretty much the same. (Oakland-28.%, Nashville-28.4%)

Fun Fact: Nashville is "blacker" than any city West of the Southern United States. Oakland is a close second, I don't even know what it would be after than, maybe Kansas City.

edit: KC is 29.9 so Nashville in the second blackest city West of the South. And on that note, Kansas City and Nashville have really identical demographics. But, Nashville does have about 130,000 more residents.

Moving from SF and the Bay Area, I would agree.

I don't think Nashville has a low black population (175,000 in the city, 253,000 in the metro)...but it has a low percentage by Southern standards (29.2% in the city, 15.9% in the metro). I think a lot of this has to do with our location in the Upper South near Appalachia. Demographically, Nashville is more like a Midwestern city than a Southern city.

Compared to peer metros in the South and Midwest:

City black %

Birmingham - 73.7%
Memphis - 63.8%
New Orleans - 60.4%
Cleveland - 53.9%
Richmond - 51.2%
Cincinnati - 46.2%
Norfolk - 43.9%
Charlotte - 35.6%
Louisville - 33.6%
Jacksonville - 31.2%
Kansas City - 31.0%
Raleigh - 29.8%
Columbus - 29.6%
Nashville - 29.2%
Indianapolis - 28.7%
Pittsburgh - 27.3%

Metro black %

Memphis - 46.1%
New Orleans - 34.3%
Norfolk - 32.2%
Richmond - 30.6%
Birmingham - 28.6%
Charlotte - 24.6%
Jacksonville - 22.2%
Raleigh - 20.7%
Cleveland - 20.7%
Columbus - 16.0%
Nashville - 15.9%
Indianapolis - 15.9%
Louisville - 14.6%
Kansas City - 13.4%
Cincinnati - 12.8%
Pittsburgh - 9.2%
