I'm working downtown. What area would you recommend? I would like to be at work in less than 10 minutes. Is there a good website to look at or area to avoid?

I'm not opposed to downtown living, my only concern is price. I just need a studio or one bedroom.

The cheaper the better, but to follow the housing 30% rule, I should probably stay below $1200.

My requirements are it is quick to work, allows pets, available, washer/dryer hookup, & quiet

I would suggest renting first before buying anything.

I doubt if anything would move so fast as to allow a 10 minute commute. A 30 minute drive for 10-15 miles may be more realistic. You could use the bus system as an estimate of travel times to your final work location. You still may have an issue with where to park & where to walk once you get downtown.

I have a parking spot downtown with my job, would a 10 minute commute not work for downtown? I've been looking at The Gulch area and google says its a little less than that. Would that not be true?

Which suburb area would be best for quickest commute to downtown then? I'm only paying downtown area prices if it will be quicker.

The Gulch is about 5 minutes, depending on which stop lights you hit. I lived at Eleven North and could be to 4th/Commerce in that time. Walking takes about 20 minutes. Might be tough on the $1,200 limit though. When I moved out earlier this year, it was closer to $1,400 for a 1-bd.

Check Blemont area and Music Row if your open to a small one bedroom, duplex or home with a legal conversion to apartments. Reasonable, I've even noted 2bedrooms @ $1000 w/ ample yard, parking and allowance for pet.
Check Craigslist but then also check advertiser/leasor against the public tax record to confirm ownership.

You might also get lucky in German Town or Salem Town area. Easy walk to parts of downtown and FREE
bus in front at the side entrance of the 8th Avenue Farmers Market can get you around to all the main downtown spots.

Good Luck!

You should be able to find something for $1200 and within a 10 minute drive. Music Row, Midtown, Edgehill Village, West End, Vandy, Germantown, Edgefield, Lockeland Springs, Belmont, the Gulch, Sobro, Rolling Mill Hill, and right downtown are all safe areas that are walkable neighborhoods and a short drive to downtown. Most would also allow you to take the bus to work very easily if you wanted to do that.

The Melrose area, maybe Berry Hill. Franklin Road would get you downtown easily, but I dont' know if you could do it in 10 minutes.

Not the true 'burbs!
Plus even when the highways a flowing smooth you often have a line getting out of some of the subdivisions or onto the highway.
