Sidenote: it bothers the crap out of me when I hear someone say Mur-fees-boro. It's like saying 'liberry' for library. If you are older than 7, then you should be able to pronounce it right, dammit.

Older people native to the area were the ones I always noticed pronouncing it with "burrah" at the end. The same group also pronounces Nashville and Clarksville "Nashvull" and "Clarksvull." At least that's what I noticed.

It's not necessarily a 'thicker' accent - just another style of Southern. I mostly hear older, more affluent natives use that particular dialect.

Yes, that is definitely an old "Suh-thuhn" drawl. That's the way my grandmother and her generation sounded. If you hear from younger folks, it sounds forced.
