Moving from Buffalo NY area to Nashville. Husband will be working at airport. What areas are within 1/2 hour driving distance from airport - everything looks ok on map, but have no idea where heavy traffic patterns are (so where to avoid).

We need a garage to use as a workshop for a business, but houses we look at don't seem to have garages???? A garage looks to be a rare find...

Thank you for any help ---- looks like a great move!

What kind of business would be in the garage?

In some areas, it may not be permissible.

Hi there - we have an antique book and prints business. we do shows and sell online. at this point, we really only need the garage/barn as a workshop, to work on the framing, boarding and organizing in between antique shows. I think we've given up to being able to have a commercial/residential property.

Do you have school-age children?

no school age children... son is 17, and pretty much runs the book/print business. It all takes up a lot of room, as it needs to be kept organized and just want to keep it condensed in the garage or barn. someday, we'll just pick an area and get a slice of land and put up a barn for a shop (and probably run small auctions - son is also an auctioneer).

we were actually going to move to Florida, but picked Nashville because my husband can transfer, and for my son and the business it seemed like a good, stable economy and central to many antique shows. My son is a history buff and loves the civil war era, and that is mainly the era of what he sells. Nashville will give him a lifetime of opportunity of less than a day's travel to sell in his niche. We want to help him pursue his passion - he is a really good kid and a force to be reckoned with in the business - I know he'll do well out of there.

Haven't mentioned, but important also - Vanderbilt hospital campus.... Son has had many heart surgeries and Vanderbilt came highly recommended for ongoing care.

Look at the Smyrna/Murfreesboro or Lebanon/MT. Juliet area. Lots of newer homes that will have garages....both are within the time frame you want to the airport.

With your son out of school, Hermitage would be the closest. Its a nice part of town but is part of the Nashville school district so that's its biggest negative. Mt Juliet would be the next closest. I think you would do fine in either. Hermitage could be a 10 - 15 minute drive to the airport. The area South of I-40 by Percy Priest Lake is nice.

Realtracs is the best way to search. Here are houses in Hermitage between 170K and 250K. Not sure of the budget but this should give an idea. Mt Juliet would be in Wilson County if you want to search Mt. Juliet.

Actually, Donelson is the closest neighborhood to the airport. 37214 ZIP code. I really like Donelson: lots of 1950s-60s ranch style homes on large wooded lots. Since schools aren't an issue but proximity to the airport is, I'd start with Donelson first, then Hermitage, then Mt Juliet.

I'd start with Donelson first too. Especially the area up by McGavock High School.

They're mostly 1950 and 60's homes, most have 2 car garages. It's really a lovely area.
