http://www.tennessean.com/article/20...-irk-residents

With an upcoming appearance on "Nashville" and some concerts that the Mellow Mushroom is planning (which I am not sure are a good idea or not), the article says that the 16 blocks of Franklin are becoming too popular.

Hmmm . . . .

I can tell you that those 16 blocks are why I moved here! (well, sorta) HOWEVER, there's no drug store or market or place to even buy aspirin. I know there is an eye glass shop but not sure there are any doctors offices? Maybe a lawyer down on the circle? What I am trying to say is that mostly it's 'tourist' shopping or a place to buy wedding gifts. It doesn't have the things you'd need if you wanted to live within walking distance of downtown and not have to drive, or to not have to drive for a few days. Unless you wanted to live on take out food.

Any thoughts? I love downtown Franklin! I often avoid it if there is something 'big' going on. And even though I only live 3 miles away, I am only downtown maybe once or twice a month. Hardly ever on weekends . . . Maybe the article is right???

Yes, certainly it is.

You said it yourself ... you avoid it at certain times. And those times will occur more often but not because of festivals and special events.

It will happen when vehicle traffic makes it impossible to get through and ruins the ambiance of the square. Or when rent is so high that few "quaint" local retailers can afford to lease there and chains take over.

The whole area will suffer over the next decade as people move in more quickly than infrastructure can serve.

So, when people come to City Data looking for relocation advice, let's stop suggesting Franklin or anywhere south of Nashville. Let's direct them to Hendersonville, Mt. Juliet or even better still, TEXAS!

I've been trying for years now.

I think it'd be great if they make all of downtown Franklin a walking street. From the circle to that 5 points area. Maybe I should start a Facebook page . . . . "Traffic Free Franklin"!

Like the promenade in Santa Monica? But where will you find the fire-eaters?

Can you busk in downtown Franklin????

Hmm . . . . been wondering how to make money in my old age. Fire eating? Sure, why not?

I can sort of juggle . . and been meaning to learn the ukulele.

I can take the Franklin Trolley down there and I'm all set! A great way to supplement my Social Security!

Walking street with Baby Boomer Buskers!!!

I've been saying this for a while.

We spend a lot of time in Cambridge England. I love it because the whole city center is essentially shut off to car traffic except buses, taxis and I think handcap stickers. It is walking/biking paradise. Even if Main St was closed off to traffic on weekends that would be nice (still easy access to car garages, and lots).

Franklin is definitely starting to suffer from it's own popularity. I think it all started going downhill when the parking garages were added...yes, they were needed, but at that point it lost some of it's small town charm. I remember when we used to go to the Chinese restaurant on Main Street and other cheaper shops and restaurants existed. Franklin is still a great place, it just doesn't feel as small and quaint to me anymore. I call it the Seaside of Middle TN...it was nicer until everyone found out about it.

Don't steer them to Hendersonville! Let's send the wingnuts to Texas or Mississippi and the suburban hipsters to Austin.

Agreed that a pedestrian only zone is a wise solution, certainly for weekends. Admittedly, I don't drive down that way often, but the last time I did I remember seeing a number of pedestrians crossing the street while traffic was oncoming. It wasn't causing a problem, but on busy weekends I bet it is a traffic hazard and a dangerous situation waiting to happen.
