My wife and I are currently in pursuit of a small plot of rural land within a 20 minute radius of Nashville, TN. Last September, we moved out of our rental in East Nashville and into a renovated travel trailer in hopes of beginning an aggressive payment process against our student loans.

As a transitionary move, we've spent our first couple months at a Nashville campground to adjust to the lifestyle and formulate a game plan. It has been surprisingly difficult to find a a farmer or landowner who will allow us to park on their land for a nominal fee.

I am aware of what codes say and frankly am not concerned as long as our parking spot is far enough outside of city limits and discreet. We are not slobs, nor are we freeloaders. We are a responsible, hard-working, respectful couple with proven track record and rental history. We care about Nashville and the people within it.

Our camper is fully furnished with a kitchen, living space, bathroom, and shower. Primary needs are a flat area to park it, electricity, and running water. We have a composting toilet installed in our trailer and are quite comfortable using it. Access to wifi and a washer/dryer would be preferred, but not a deal breaker.

To those who have lived in the area longer, is it unrealistic to think that a place like this exists? With the amount of country property located all around Nashville, I feel like there has to be someone out there who would be interested in making a couple hundred extra dollars every month or having help on their homestead. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

What degrees do you guys have? Glad to see you're doing everything you can to stay afloat instead of blaming the world for your students loans. Kudos. Your independent "do what it takes" attitude will surely lead you to success. Best of luck.

My wife's degree is in photo journalism and mine is in show production. We both work freelance in a variety of forms. She mostly takes jobs as a copy-writer, editor, or photographer and I tour for a living. I've been out with a number of nationally recognized artists as part of their crew.

There's no point in blaming anyone for our debt. I agree. The best thing anyone can do is arm themselves with a mind that seeks a positive solution.

Have you thought about being onsite managers for a storage place? Somewhere that people park their own RVs, tour buses?? Maybe you can work out a deal with one of them? Or advertise in a rural newspaper? I take it you don't really have to be too close to Nashville for work? Maybe ask around at the Farmers Markets?
