Our family is considering moving from Washington, DC to Nashville early next year. We currently live in Dupont Circle, a gay-friendly neighborhood in the DC where we can walk to most amenities. We send our 3-year old daughter to a Jewish preschool, despite the fact we are Catholic. We are searching for a neighborhood in the Metro Nashville area that is fairly walkable for our day-to-day errands. My husband and I both work from home (IT specialist, nonprofit consultant), so commute time really isn't an issue. We are willing to see if the public school system can meet our daughter's needs; if not, we will pay for private school.

We are contemplating this move so we can SLOW DOWN, ride our bikes more often, and have a 3 bedroom home with a small yard for our daughter to play. While we are willing to spend up to 800K for a home, we don't want nor need to have the biggest home on the block. We are very interested in finding a neighborhood that has people of all ages in it, not necessarily a neighborhood comprised of mostly high-earning families. Note: I have been involved in city politics and also serve on the board of a local nonprofit; I would expect to engage in similar types of activities once in Nashville and would like to be situated in a neighborhood where others are engaged in a variety of community endeavors.

I know we are asking for a lot, but what neighborhoods might meet most of our criteria? We have been thinking Hillsboro, Belmont, or perhaps East Nashville might fit the bill. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you!

I would recommend 12South. Many places for walking around and you're right in the middle of everything.

Germantown would also be a good place to look.

East Nashville would be a good choice. Check out the Locke land Springs neighborhood.

Wow. That's a tall order, moving here from one of the most coveted areas of a city like Washington DC.

I have a few questions:

1) You mentioned "gay-friendly" first. Are you gay, or is that just something you're proud of about your current neighborhood?
2) Do you want to find another Jewish preschool or a Catholic preschool or do you have a preference? I cannot tell if you mentioned that as a positive or a negative.
3) Would you rather your new neighborhood comprise families of similar income or varied ages?
4) What daily amenities do you consider "essential"?
5) Have you been to Nashville?

1) We are not a same-sex couple but are receptive to living in a neighborhood with a large number of same-sex couples if it has most of the amenities we are looking for in the area.
2) I simply mentioned the fact our daughter attends a Jewish preschool because we are open to the possibility of placing her in a religiously affiliated preschool and/or elementary school if it is a high caliber one. We are VERY comfortable living with people whose backgrounds and politics are different than ours (liberal Irish Catholic professionals.) Frankly, it is more important for us to live in a neighborhood where people actually know one another and speak to one another.
3) We would prefer that our new neighborhood is comprised of people of varied ages, not just upper-middle class families.
4) Essential amenities would be a coffee shop, pharmacy/convenience store, dry cleaner, and some locally owned restaurants to grab lunch or dinner. We are not major shoppers, so being near a mall or high-end retail isn't really necessary or desirable. We would like to have a park, grocery store, farmer's market, bike trails, and perhaps an independent movie theater within 15 minutes of our home.
5) My husband and I will be spending a week in Nashville this September. We would like to have a list of prospective neighborhoods to check out and talk to locals before we make our final decision. Since we have lived in the South (Savannah, Orlando, Knoxville) before, we do feel as if we understand that life will be somewhat different for us.

You need to check out Lockeland Springs, Edgefield, East End or Eastwood in East Nashville. Sounds like as perfect a fit as your going to get in Nashville. Good luck!

Yeah, was going to mention Germantown. Not slamming Germantown, they have a lot going on over there, I just thought the neighborhoods in East /Nashville were a bit more family friendly, more diverse, and more walkable amentities they were mentioning (at least for now in my unbiased opinion ). Not sure how old your daughter is but Lockeland Design is one of the best rated elementary schools in Middle Tn (it goes way downhill for Middle Schools but private might be an option then). And all of the East Nashville Mom's Clubs are very active.
